Description

May 7, 1968 A. N. 0| ADDARIO BED CLOTHING 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed April 6, 1966 44/4014! Mad/QM 24 INVENTOR! BY ALEXANDER N. DIADDARIO M QMZZV QW .A TTORNEYS United States Patent 3,381,321 BED CLOTHING Alexander N. Di Addario, 8888 The Fairways, Clarence, N.Y. 14031 Filed Apr. 6, 1966, Ser. No. 540,619 1 Claim. (Cl. -334) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bed covering device such as a sheet or the like having a main body portion coextensive with the mattress area and provided with side and end extensions. The extensions are adapted to be tucked around the corresponding sides and ends of the mattress and the corners of the extensions are truncated. The top end extension is materially longer than the other extensions so as to be folded back on top of the main body portion, and then back again upon itself to conceal a pillow and thereafter having an end portion to be tucked around the top end and under the mattress.
This invention relates to bed clothing, and more particularly to an improved combination bed and mattress and pillow covering construction; whereby to facilitate making up a bed in improved manner. One object is to provide an improved mattress covering as aforesaid which includes a pillow enclosing portion; thereby eliminating the need for separate pillow cases. Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in detail upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top perspective view showing a mattress made up with a covering in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 illustrates how the covering of FIG. 1 may also be employed to provide an improved pillow case or covering;
FIGS. 3 and 4 are sections taken along lines 3-3 and 4-4 of FIGS. 1 and 2, respectively;
FIG. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of FIG. 1; and
FIGS. 6 and 7 are views of two typical planform modifications of bed mattress covering devices made in accordance with the invention.
As shown by way of example herein, the invention may be embodied in a bed sheet 10 illustrated as being made up on a mattress 12. As shown in FIG. 6, the sheet 10 is provided with guide lines 1414 running lengthwise of the sheet along opposite sides thereof; and also a guide line 16 running across the foot end of the sheet. The guide lines 14--1416 are positioned on the sheet to conform to the planform dimensions of the mattress upon which the sheet is to be used. All of the guide lines may be either printed or woven or embroidered in the fabric or otherwise provided, and preferably will comprise portions of the ornamentation of the sheet (or blanket or other covering, as the case may be).
As shown in FIG. 6, a guide line 18 is also provided as explained hereinabove to assist in positioning the sheet relative to the head end of the mattress. Further guide lines 20, 21, are provided to guide the bed-maker to fold the sheet initially into the form shown at FIG. 3 whereby the bed pillows may then be infolded relative 3,381,321 Patented May 7, 1968 to the sheet as shown at FIG. 4; thereby providing a novel form of pillow case.
To make up a bed with a sheet or other covering as shown in FIG. 6, it will first be spread fiatwise upon the mattress and located thereon so that the guide lines 1414 will lie along the side edges of the mattress, and so that the guide lines 16-18 will lay along the foot and head edges of the mattress. The head end extension or flap portion of the sheet will then be lifted and accordianfolded into the form shown in FIG. 3; the extreme upper edge portion of the sheet being draped down along the head end of the mattress and tucked thereunder as shown at 24 in FIG. 3. The pillow (or pillows) may then be inserted between the layers of folded material as shown at FIGS. 2 and 4. Or, alternatively, the head end extension portion of the sheet may first be reverse-folded on line 18 towards the foot end of the mattress, and the pillows then placed in their normal position. The sheet flap is then folded back up over the pillows at line 20, and thence downwardly and under the head end of the mattress (FIG. 4). Thus the need for separate pillow cases is eliminated. The foot end of the sheet will of course also be tucked under the mattress as shown at FIGS. 1-4.
To reduce the volume of material at the foot corners of the bed, the sheet may be square cut off as illustrated by the solid line showing, or truncated as along the lines indicated at 3030 in FIG. 6. Also, as shown in FIG. 6, the shoulder" corners of the sheet may be square-cut and/or truncated at some angle such as shown at 3232, to still further reduce the material piled up at the corners when the bed is made. A still further reduction of folded material volume may be attained by cutting off the corners of the bed clothing at the extreme head end, as indicated at 34, 34. It is a particular feature of the device of the invention that the sheet cover cutouts in themselves define guide devices for locating and folding the sheet as explained hereinabove. It is not absolutely essential that the guide lines 14, 14, 16, 18, be provided, because the user may instead employ the sheet edge intersection points as guide devices.
FIG. 7 illustrates another form of mattress cover of the invention wherein the pillow encasing feature of FIGS. l-6, is omitted. In this case the mattress covering device is shown to include the basic guide line devices 14, 14, 16, 18, to facilitate proper initial locating of the mattress cover of the invention; whereupon the side and end flaps may then be simply tucked under. The corners of the sheet may be square-cut and/or bevelled off or truncated as indicated by the diagonal lines 30, 30, 32, 32 as explained hereinabove. Note that by truncating the corners of the sheet of the invention, it is thereby rendered less vulnerable to the normal rigors of use at the corners, such as during laundering and/or other normal handling thereof.
Whereas only a few forms of the invention have been illustrated and described in detail hereinabove, it will be appreciated that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A bedsheet or the like comprising a main body portion of rectangular configuration and of an area substantially coextensive with that of a mattress upon which it is to be placed,
said main body portion having opposite side extensions to embrace the opposite sides and be tucked under the associated mattress,
said main body portion having a bottom extension for Wrapping around and tucking under the bottom end of the associated mattress,
and said main body portion having a top extension of a length to present a first portion folded back upon the top of the main body portion, a second portion folded over the first portion to conceal a pillow therebethe top end of the associated mattress.
