Patented July 12, 1932 AMANDA D. SWETZEL, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA COMBINATION DOUBLE THROW AND MATTRESS COVER Application filed November 12, 1930. Serial No. 495,074.
The present invention relates to an improved combination double throw and mattress cover, and while it is particularly adapted for babies cribs, it also can be used for double beds and twin beds.
It is a purpose of .the present invention to provide an article of manufacture of this kind, which not only ernlits a babys bed to be made up very quic 1y but also allows one throw to be turned under while the other throw is exposed, especially if the throw which is turned under is soiled, and in this manner a babys crib and a double bed or twin beds may be made up to match.
Another purpose is to provide a combined mattress cover and double throw, the cover on one side being of one shade or color while on the opposite side a different shade or color, the same thing with the two throws, so that in making up a babys crib it is possible to give a different appearance.
One of the features of the invention consists in constructing the cover of similar shaped pieces arranged flat against themselves, with parts which correspond with the dimensions of the mattress. Said similar shaped pieces are formed integral. with throws at the head of the mattress case or cover, one of the throws adapted to be folded down over the mattress case or cover with a pillow underneath, while the other throw may be folded under the mattress case or cover, both throws having stitched to their marginal edges a lace trim or the like to present an attractive appearance. The mattress case or cover pieces are also formed integral with valance sections at the side and forward edges of the mattress case and cover, said valance sections likewise having stitched to their margins lace trims or the like. The valance sections may have ornamentations and are of the same color corresponding to the parts of the pieces of the case or cover which are substantially of the same dimen- However each of the pieces of the mattress case or cover are of different colors, so that when the mattress is turned a different color scheme may be presented, it being obvious that the two pieces constituting the opposite faces of the .in other figures wherein the stitching of the mattress case or cover are stitched at three locations, while at a point adjacent certain of the valance sections are free and unattached to permit of the insertion of a mattress.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative, and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the combination throw and mattress cover as applied to a mattress, the mattress in such an instance may be adapted for a babys crib. 7
Figure 2 shows views of the two pieces which constitute the mattress case or cover prior to being stitched together.
Figure 3 is a sectional View longitudinally of the mattress case or cover, showing the case or cover as though it contains a mat tress.
Figure 4 is a view showing the mattress cover or case slightly modified to that shown two pieces is in different locations.
Referring to the drawing, 1 identifies a mattress case or cover which may be made of any suitable cloth fabric, of any color or shade and may be made of any size especially for a crib mattress.
The mattress cover or case comprises two pieces 2 and 3 of corresponding shape, the parts 4 within the area of the stitches 6, 7 and 8 of said pieces corresponding in dimensions substantially to that of a mattress 5 to be inserted between the two pieces. The opposite pieces of the mattress case or cover are stitched together at 6, 7 and 8, that is I along two side edges, and the foot of the mattress. However in Figure 4 the two pieces are stitched together adjacent one side edge, the head and the foot edge of the mattress.
In this manner certain portions of the two 1H3 pieces are free and unattached, providing an opening 3a permitting of the insertion of a mattress either through the side, or through the head of the case or cover.
The two pieces are also formed integral with a pair of throws 8a and 9, either one of which may be folded down over the upper face of the case to cover a pillow 10 thereunder, while the other throw may be folded under the case or cover. The marginal edges of both throws have suitable lace trims 11 or the like stitched thereto to provide for an attractive appearance. The two pieces of the case or cover may be of similar shade or color or of different shades or color, the throws corresponding. In this manner the case or cover may present a very attractive appearance, and when making up a bgbys crib it would be possible to make up a double bed in the same room in order to correspond.
Also formed integral with the two pieces are valance sections 12a at the side and foot edges of the cover, the marginal edges of the valance sections also having lace trims or the like 12, while the faces of the valance sections may have embroidered thereon any suitable ornamentation as identified at 13. The valance sections of the upper exposed piece may hang at the side and foot of the bed, while the valance sections of the under piece of the case or cover may be folded under, or the valance sections of both pieces may hang at the sides and foot of the bed. The throws are provided with female snap fastener 14 to engage with the male snap fastener 15, so as to hold either throw over a pillow.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
A combined double throw and cover for mattresses, the body consisting of opposite pieces being stitched together at least three quarters of the way around the margin of the body, the remaining portion of the edge being free andunstitched, causing an opening to be formed to permit of the insertion of the mattress, the opposite pieces of the body being of different design or color, a pair of throws carried by the opposite edges of the opening, said throws correspondingly matching the opposite pieces of the body, one to be exposed and to overlie a pillow to match with the exposed piece of the body, the other throw necessarily folded under the cover, thereby avoiding contrasting appearance, fastening means to connect the free ends of the throws to the cover, a plurality of pairs of valance sections carried by the edge of the cover which is stitched three quarters of the way around, one set of valance sections corresponding in design and color to one piece of the body, the other set corresponding in design and color to the opposite piece of the ody, only one set of valance sections being exposed to match the exposed piece of the body, the while the other set of valance sections are folded under the cover.
In testimony whereof she aflixes her signature. v
