April 27, 1965 R. CARRIS BUTTONED DOWN BED SHEETS 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed March 8, 1963 I Fig. 5:
INVENTOR. v RITA CARRIS.
ATTOP/Viy April 27, 1965 R. CARRIS BUTTONED DOWN BED SHEETS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 8, 1963 I L T INVENTOR. RITA CARRIS ATTQPA/EV United States Patent 3,179,958 BUTTONED DOWN BED SHEETS Rita Cari-is, 110 E. 36th St., New York 21, N.Y. Filed Mar. 8, 1963, Ser. No. 263,878 1 Claim. (Cl. -334) This invention concerns an improvement in bed sheets.
According to the invention, there is provided an improved bed sheet construction in which a bed sheet is provided with lateral buttonholes for engaging buttons on a mattress. Two sheets may be provided, one being an under-sheet and the other an over-sheet. The over-sheet can have an extended length to form a flap for engaging a comforter or blanket at the head end of a bed. The over-sheet can also be provided with an extension at the foot end to overlap the foot of the mattress. A button on the foot of the mattress can engage in a buttonhole in the foot extension of the over-sheet. This arrangement stabilizes the under-sheet and over-sheet and keeps a bed in a stabilized array.
It is therefore a principal object of the invention to provide a bed sheet with lateral and end buttonholes for engaging buttons on a mattress.
A further object is to provide an assembly of an undersheet and over-sheet for a mattress, together with means for stabilizing the sheets on the mattress to prevent their displacement.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a mattress and sheet assembly embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 and FIG. 3 are sectional views taken on lines 2-2 and 33, respectively, of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the mattress of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 and FIG. 6 are plan views of the under-sheet and over-sheet, respectively, of FIGS. 1-3.
FIG. 7 is a plan view of another over-sheet.
FIG. 8 is a side elevational view of a mattress and sheet assembly employing the under-sheet of FIG. 5 and the over-sheet of FIG. 7.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in FIGS. 1-4 a mattress 10 of conventional rectangular form. At the foot end 12 of the mattress and preferably centered thereon is a large, flat button 14. On both long sides 15 of the mattress are two or more large, flat buttons 16 spaced apart longitudinally of the mattress.
A rectangular under-sheet 20, shown best in FIG. 5, is provided with a plurality of groups of buttonholes 22. The holes in each group are spaced uniformly from the outer edges 23 of the sheet. The groups are spaced apart longitudinally of the sheet equal to the spacing of buttons 16 on the sides of the mattress. The sheet can be folded on lateral lines L parallel to edges 23 for overlapping the sides 15 of the mattress, so that a button 16 can be engaged in one hole of each group of holes 22.
An over-sheet 25, best shown in FIGS. 1-3 and FIG. 6, may be provided for use over the under-sheet 20. This over-sheet is generally rectangular in form with a rectangular flap extension 26 at its head end. At its foot end the sheet has a rectangular flap extension 28 provided with centrally located buttonholes 3% for engaging button 14 on the foot end of the mattress. The flap 28 is folded on line F. Lateral buttonholes 32 are provided in groups near the lateral edges 33 of the sheet. The sheet can be folded on lateral lines L parallel to edges 33 for over- 3,179,958 Patented Apr. 27, 1965 ice lapping the sides of the mattress. The sheet can be folded on further lateral lines L" for tucking marginal edges E under the mattress.
Depending on the thickness of the mattress, the buttons 14 and 16 can be engaged in any one of the holes in each of the groups ofholes on the under-sheet and over-sheet. Flap 26 can be folded down on transverse line T and engaged over the head end of a blanket or comforter (not shown). The user can then lie on the mattress between sheets 20 and 25 with assurance that the sheets will not slide or become displaced on the mattress.
In FIGS. 7 and 8, the over-sheet 25 is similar to oversheet 25, except that the head end of the sheet is squared 0d at extension 26. Rectangular corner sections C will be folded on transverse line T and on lateral lines L for overlapping the sides of the mattress 10' and marginal portions E of the sheet at the head end of the mattress. The under-sheet 20 is disposed under the over-sheet 25 in FIG. 8. Buttons 16 are engaged in buttonholes 22 and 32 of the under-sheet and over-sheet. Button 14 engages one of buttonholes '30 in the flap extension 28.
It is to be understood that instead of switched-on buttons, snap buttons, snap fasteners or any other fastening clasps may be used.
In all arrangements of the sheets, the buttons at the sides and foot end hold the sheets in a stable array so that a person lying between the sheets can sleep comfortably without being subject to sliding of the sheets. A further advantage is derived in that making up of the bed can be done more quickly than heretofore since engagement of the buttons in the buttonholes locates and holds the sheets properly on the mattress. In addition, the sheets remain in a tidy arrangement so that labor heretofore expended in straightening disarranged sheets is saved.
The sheets can be made up for different size beds. By properly locating the lateral buttonholes, the same size sheets can be used for twin sized, three-quarter size and full size or double size beds. The proper spacing of the several buttonholes in each group to engage buttons 14, 16 makes this multiple use of the sheets possible.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent In a made up bed, a rectangular boxtype mattress having flat parallel vertical sides, a fiat foot end perpendicularly disposed to said sides, a fiat top and a fiat bottom, a plurality of buttons secured to said sides in positions spaced longitudinally thereof, another button centrally located on said foot end of the mattress, a rectangular under-sheet draped over the top and sides of the mattress, said under-sheet having groups of elongated buttonholes spaced apart longitudinally of the under-sheet near opposite lateral edges of the under-sheet, the elongated buttonholes in each group thereof being parallel to each other and to edges of the under-sheet and spaced apart, said plurality of buttons being each engaged in one buttonhole of each group thereof so that the under-sheet is held stable on the mattress, and an over'sheet on the under-sheet, said over-sheet having other groups of buttonholes spaced apart longitudinally of the over-sheet near opposite lateral edges of the over-sheet, the buttonholes in each of the other groups being disposed parallel to each other and to edges of the over-sheet and spaced apart, said plurality of buttons also being engaged in one buttonhole in each of the other groups, said over-sheet having a flap at one end extending 3 over the foot end oflthe mattress, said flap having a centrally located elongated buttonhole engaged in the button on the foot end of the mattress, whereby the over-sheet is held stable on the mattress, said over-sheet having an extension at its other end adapted to be folded over the remainder of the over-sheet for engaging a comforter therein, said extension having a length transversely of said over-sheet less than the width of the over-sheet between lateral edges thereof, said flap having a length transversely 4 of said over-sheet less than the width of the over-sheet between lateral edges thereof.
