JAMES E. LINDSAY, OF SELMA, LOUISIANA.
HOSE AND GARMENT SUPPOBTER.
specificatifln of Letters Patent Patented June 15, 19.20.
Application filed June 3. 1919. Serial No. 301.379. Renewed March 4. 1920. Serial No. 363.285.
1 i) all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. LINDSAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Selma, in the county of Grant and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose and Garment Supporters, of which the following 1S a specification.
This invention relates to hose and garment supporters and more particularly to an improved device for gripping the hose or garment to support the same in a manner that will prevent injury being done to the garment.
One of the objects of the invention 1s to provide a device of this character which may be quickly and readily detached from the supporting strap but which will be so constructed as to prevent accidental or casual detachment.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporting device of this character which will include all of the desired features which go to make an improved article of this character but which will be constructed so that the device will lie flat and afford comfort to the wearer and will not cause a bulging or distorting of the outer garments. j
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will include elongated jaws suitably covered with removable covering which is mounted so that it may be renewed when desired.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, the jaws being shown in open position. i
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail fragmentary elevation of a portion of the attaching member, parts being shown in section to more clearly disclose the structure.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the blank form which provides the covering for the curved jaws.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of a portion of the invention.
Referring particularly to the drawings vided with whereinis illustrated the'preierred form 1 of my invention, the supporting strap 1 is attached to a supporting band or to a portion of the garment in any preferred manner and is equipped with a loop An attaching loop or bar 3 is connected with the loop 2 and this member consists of the substantially U-shaped tubular element 4, the open ends of which are adapted to receive the locking element 5 which is also U-shaped and cooperates with the U- shaped member 4 to form the attaching bar. One of the edges of themember 5 is pro a recess 6 to the bottom of which is attached a fiat spring 7 carrying a stud 8. The member 5 is inserted in the open ends of the member 4, this stud 8 is adapted to register with an opening 9 in one of the legs of the U-shaped member 4 to prevent displacement or detaching or the members until such time as the member 8 is pushed inwardly by the user. This device it will be noted provides parallel bars, one of which engages the loop 2 and the other is adapted to receive the 10 and 11. The arms lOand 11 are formed of a single strip of material bent intermediate its ends to form the loop 12 which passes over the lowermost of the parallel arms included in the supporting member 3. The latter is provided with spaced apart lugs or projections 13 shown to advantage in Fig. 1., and between these projections the loop 12 is mounted and it will be obvious that the relative movement of the supporting arms 10 and 11 on the supporting member 8 will be prevented by this construction. The arms 10 and 11 are provided with a longitudinally slidable ferrule 14 which is adapted to close and open the lower ends of the arms as the ferrule is longitudinally moved thereon. Each of the arms is provided with a lug 15 which may engage above the ferrule as shown in Fig. 1 when the ferrule is moved to its lowermost position thereby maintaining the ferrule in position against upward sliding movement.
Attached to each of the arms 10 and 11 is a curved jaw member 16 which is longitudinally curved as shown in Fig. 2 to conform to the curvature of the leg of the wearer. Each jaw member 16 is covered with a removable cover 17 which is shown detached in Fig. 5. The material is preferably sheet rubber or similar resilient material and consists of the elongated strip jaw supporting arms to'be understood that L 17 having the flaps 18 attached to the opposite marginal edges and spaced apart to provide the gaps 19 whereby the arms 10 and 11 ma be secured in position. face of the central strip portion 17 1s provided with corrugations 20 and these corrugations are adapted to register when the jaws are closed to more effectively maintain a garment in firmly fined position betweenthejaws. At each end of the strip 'member 17, is a pocket 21 shown in Figs. 5 V
and 6, and each pocket is adapted to receive one end of the corresponding aw 16 and since the jaws have a certain amount of reslhency it will be obvious that they may be readily sprung closed together into'position 1n the pocket, after whlch the flaps 18 are bent over theback portions of the jaws and V glued, pasted, or-otherwise secured together so that thesjaws are entirely embraced'by the covering material. By virtue of this construction, the renewing of the covering io'rthe aws is easilyaccomplished.
The foregoing c description and accom panying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or jiireferred form of my invention. I: desire it 7 may make such changes in the constructien, combination and arrangement er parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within clalms.
the scope oi the appended Having thus fully described my invention-what I claim as new and desire to se- 7 cure by Letters Patent is 1. A garment supporter comprising supporting arms having elongated arcuate jaws secured to their terminals, each aw being One in presence of two witnesses.
provided with a covering, the said covering having pockets in its ends to receive the ends 'of thesaid jaws, the approximate surfaces of the covering being corrugated, and flaps formed on the covering and adapted to be glued together to maintain the covering in position on the said jaws.
2. A garment supporter comprising supporting arms arcuate jaws attached to the ends of the arm, each jaw being provided with a covering comprising a strip of rub 'ber 'materialhaving a corrugated surface prising a U-shaped element having its par-- allel arms received-in the said loops ,the said parallel arms having open ends, a removable U-shaped member adapted for vinsertion in'the open ends of the said parallel arms, and locking means carried'by'one of V the arms and engageable with 'one of the open ends of the sald element to closethe space between the open ends of the said par allel arms.
In testimony whereof" I alfix-my signature JAMES E. LmnsAY. Witnesses:
