To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro K. GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Netawaka, in the county of Jackson, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoop-Gates and Clips Therefor; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a class of wagons and more particularly to scoop or end gates for wagon bodies, of that type adapted to be elevated against the ends of the side portions-of the wagon body when in closed position, or to be lowered to an inclined position for the purpose of forming a scoop designedto retain thereon the load, when the material is such as to permit it to be carried without having the end gates in elevated positions.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved scoop gate and clip therefor which will pivotally support the gate for movement toward and away from the sides of the wagon body, and which will facilitate the swinging movement thereof, while obviatingthe possibility of the sides of the scoop splitting or coming apart due to their separationfrom the bottom of the scoop gate, as, commonly occurs, where the sides are employed for the purpose of supporting the Weight of theload arranged upon the gate,thereby obviating the possibility of the contents of the wagon dumping out when the same is being transported.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a clip for scoop gates of the class described, which will facilitate the pivotal mounting of the gate, and which is so constructed with the least number of operations and which maybe readily attached to'w'agons newly built, or equipped with mountings upon which the present device is an improvement. With the above objects and others in view, as will appearas the. specification proceeds, the invention comprises certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly specified and claimed. 7 V 7 Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, wherein like reference characters indicate SCOOP-GATE AND CLIP THEREFOR.

In the construction of farm wagons, and more particularly those in which the bodies are provided with scoop gates at one or both ends thereof, it is common to arrange a strip across the-body at the ends thereof, such for instance, as the rear end, so as to project outwardlyat the sidesand beyond said rear or discharge end. On the other hand, the gate is provided with side portions having the lower corners thereof adjacent to the bottom of the gate, cut out to receive the projecting ends of saidstrip therein in order to pivotally support the gate upon its'side portions so that the gate'm ay be moved to open or closed positions and held in the latter position by means also serving'to sup port the gate in an inclined position elevated at its rear end, when lowered for carrying a load. The weight of the load is therefore sustained by the connecting means between the bottomof the gate and the side pieces which engage the pro'ecting ends of the cross strip and as said side portions thus split or become disconnected from the bottom portion of the gate, the result is that the load carried thereby will be accidentally discharged or dumped in transit, thereby causing much annoyance and inconvenience in repairing the gate and recovering the portion of the load accidentally discharged.

Itis the purpose of the present invention to overcome the difliculties mentioned, and to facilitate the pivotal mounting of the end gate in a way'which will render it thoroughly reliable, strong and durable in use, as well as capable of accomplishing all of the functions attributed thereto, in an efficient manner. For this purpose, there is shown in the accompanying drawings, the preferred embodiment of the invention, in

which the numeral designates the wagon body having a bottom portion 11 and sides '12 upon the upper edges of whichmay be body maybe supported upon wheels or other means, for transportation in the usual manner, this portion of the wagon forming no part of the present invention.

'However, in lieu of the ordinary cross strips with reduced end portions for pivotally supporting the scoop or end gate, as is commonin the art, I provide a cross strip or bolster 15 with its ends projecting beyond the sides of. the body, said strip being of a continuous width throughout its length.

The gate is of the usual construction and embodies a bottom portion 16 and side portions 17, said side portions being secured edgewise to the bottom 16 adjacent to the side edges of the latter and tapering toward their upper or rear extremities or widening toward their lower front edges as shown.

' Instead of recessing the lower rear corners of the side portions and securing said side portions to the bottom in a manner to pro ject below the lower edge of the latter, said side portions have their upper and lower edges or extremities terminating adjacent to the top and bottom or front or rear edges of the bottom portion 16. The bottom is also providedwith the usual openings 18 near the oppositesides thereof, for receiving straps 19 therethrough, which straps are secured to theouter faces of the extension boards 13 so as to project rearwardly from the Vertical edges of the extension sides, or vice versa, in the event of the application of the device to the front of the wagon body, so as to extend through the openings 18.

The rear ends of the strips 19 are apertured to receive therein the hooked ends 20 of rods 21 having eyes 22 at their free extremities for a purpose as will appear presently.

, In order to pivotally support the scoop or end gate, the improved clip is provided and the cross strip 15 is. retained against the sides 12 of the wagon body through the medium of strap irons or bolts 23 secured to the outer faces ofsaid sides and extending through the projecting extremities of the strip 15, with nuts 24 engaged on the threaded lower extremities thereof, in order to sustain the weight borne by the strips in supporting theend gate. These clips are arranged upon the projecting extremities of the cross strip 15, and each comprises a plate 25 having a down turned forward extremity 26 forming a shoulder to engage the front edge of the strip and a vertical aperture 27 for receiving suitable securing means therethrough, whereby the device is held from turning on the projecting ends of the cross strips in connection with the shoulders produced by the down turned portions 26. The opposite ends of the plate 25 are provided with upwardly extending or offset bearing aperture through each pivot.

In this manner, the scoop .or end,gate is supported for pivotal movement, thesides as well as the bottQm, bearing the weight of the load so that splitting of the sides or. displacement of the bottom relative to the sides, is obviated. It is also to be understood, that the angle plates or sockets will move with the sidesof the ,gate when pivotedas described. Thus, the difliculties experienced with devices constructed asat present generally employed, will be obviated, while the, parts of the present {device can beeconomically produced andreadilyassembledfor use. i

1. The combination with a wagon body; of across strip having its ends projecting beyond the sides of the body, a scoop gate mounted upon said extremities for swinging movement relative to the body in opening and closing, means to support said gate in open or closed positions, angle .plates'anounted upon and inclosingthe lowercorners of the gate, bearing brackets carried by 1 and .extending rearwardly of the extremities of the cross strip, and pins ,pivotaglly-connecting the angle plates with the rear end portions of the bearing brackets.- 2. The combination with a wagon body and a scoop gate having a bottom portion and side portions with theextremities of the latter terminating at the top and bottom edges of said bottom portion; of projections at the opposite sides of the body below the bottom thereof, angle plates receiving the lower corners of the gate therein, and plates mounted upon said projecting portions and pivotally receiving said angle plates therein whereby to sustain the load upon the bottom portion of the gate in conjunction with the side portions thereof.

The combination with a wagon body and a scoop gate adapted to be retained in a raised or lowered position; of a cross strip having support beneath the bottom of the body and projecting beyond the sides thereof, and a clip for each side of the scoop gate, each clip comprising a plate secured upon said projecting ends and having a down turned forward extremity and a bearing sleeve projecting upwardly at its rear end, an angular plate having an outwardly projecting pivot pivotally retained in the bearing sleeve, and receiving the corners of the gate therein, said angular plates each having a side portion, a rear portion and a bottom portion, as and for the purposes speci- 4. The combination with a cross strip adapted to be positioned beneath the bottom of a wagon body to project beyond the sides thereof, and an end gate having a bottom portion and side portions secured edgewise thereto and having their forward or lower extremities contiguous with the adjacent edge of the bottom portion; of angular sockets receiving said corner portions of the gate and means carried upon the extremities of the cross strips to pivotally support said sockets.

The combination with a cross strip adapted to be positioned beneath the bottom of a wagon body to project beyond the sides thereof, and an end gate having a bottom portion and side portions secured edgewise thereto and having their forward or lower extremities contiguous with the adjacent edge of the bottom portion; of means for supporting and retaining said gate in raised or closed position and in lowered or opened position inclined toward the body from the bottom portion thereof, plates secured upon the extremities of the strips and retained against turning thereon, and angular members receiving and retaining the lower corners of the gate therein, said angular members having outwardly projecting pivots pivotally supported by said plates.

6. A supporting clip for scoop gates comprising a plate having a downturned extremity an a sleeve at its opposite end, said plate having means for anchoring the same, and an angular plate having a side portion at the outslde, a rear portion and a bottom portion, and an outwardly projecting pivot engaging the sleeve of the plate and retained from displacement therein. The combination with a wagon body having a bottom strip of continuous width throughout and projecting beyond the sides thereof; of a scoop gate having side portions and a bottom portion, means to hold said gate in closed or open position, and' clips removably and pivotally supporting the corners of the gate adjacent to the body so as to distribute the weight of the load thereof upon said bottom portion and side portions and to prevent lateral displacement thereof.
