FEED-BOX- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
Application filed November 2, 1904. Serial No. 231,171.
To all whom it may conccrn:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. H. STONE- BURNER and CHARLES D. STONEBURNER, re-
siding at Arlington, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Feed- Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to feed-boxes, and has for its object the construction of a box which may be readily applied to a wagon, which may be folded up so as to occupy but a small space when not in use, which shall prevent the loss of any of the contents, and which shall be simple and durable.
The invention may be generally summarized as consisting of the combinations of elements for the purpose specified set forth in the claims annexed to and. forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the box, showing the same opened, the retaining-board being folded down into the position shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of said box. Fig. 3 represents a detail sectional view of the front and part of the bottom of the box on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents an end elevation with part of the end broken away, showing the box open for use. Fig. 5 represents a detail in elevation of the back part of the box, and Fig. 6 represents a sectional detail on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
The box consists of a top or cover A, a back B, ends C, and a front D. The cover is hinged. to the top of the back part B by hinges a a. (See Fig. 1.) The back B may be provided with a sliding portion 1) near each end of the same for the purpose of fitting the box to the back of a wagon, the sides of said wagon being provided with the ordinary cleats for the end-gate, the back B taking the place of the ordinary back-board of such wagon. A sliding connection between the part b and the back B is provided by means of a hooked strap 1), having the slots 1) there- .in, through which and, through slots 1) in the part I) extend the bolts 1), nuts I) on said bolts enabling the part b to be secured in any desired position with reference to the back B. The hooks b on the end of each strap 1) enable the box to be supported on the side of the wagon or any other convenient portion thereof.
\Vith the width of the members I) as shown in the drawings the box may be readily applied to the front or rear end of a wagon in place of the ordinary end-board thereof, provided that the cleats for such board are at the extreme end of the body, enabling said members to be supported by the end of the floor. By merely widening the said members, so that the lower edges thereof are as low as the bottom of the box, the box may be applied to wa on-bodies the bottoms of which extend considerable beyond said cleats.
The end C and the front D are secured together and the front is hinged to the bottom part E. Folding links 0 c, pivoted, respec' tively, to the ends C and the back B and pivotally connected together at 0 limit the opening movement of the box and hold the parts in position for use, as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to prevent the loss of any grain fromthe ends of the box, we provide the box at each end and interiorly of the ends C with the transverse member C. These transverse members extend from the back of the box to the front thereof when the box is closed and are of the shape shown in Fig. 4. They fit closely against the ends 0; but to prevent the parts from separating, as by warping or otherwise, to permit the escape of grain therebetween We have provided means for holding these parts in contact, such means being shown more particularly in Figs. 4 and 6. 1
F designates a metal plate secured, as by screws f, to the lower end of the transverse member C. This plate is provided with an arcuate slot, the center of curvature of such slot f being the junction of the bottom E and the front D. A bolt G extends through the lower rear portion of the end C and through the slot f, a recess f being formed between the plate F and the portion of the transverse member 0 adjacent thereto for the reception of the head of the bolt G,
whereby said bolt may travel with the lower portion of the end C sliding along in said slot. A stud or elongated washer g is provided between the nut g and the end C for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
I11 order to cause the lowering of the front of the box to raise the cover of the same, we

A feed-box having in combination a receive the folded retaining-board and at the back, a pivoted cover, a front, and ends, said same time permit the front of the box to be completely closed.
If desired, a small box M may be provided at any convenient place within the feed-box l for the receptionof tools or lunch.
The cover may be provided with block a, having a turn-button a thereon adapted to hold a saw. If desired, a partition intermediate of and similar in construction to the j transverse members C may be provided, whereby the box may be divided into separate portions.
While we have described our invention as adapted to be applied to the back of a wagon have connected the lower rear corner of said end with said cover by means of a link. This link is made of two sections it it, said sections being adjustably connected by means of slots and bolts extending therethrough, as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 4. By means of this adjustable connection the link-sections h it may be so adjusted that the act of lower ing the front of the box causes the cover to be lifted, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4E, and the link connection thereafter supports said cover in its elevated position.
The length of the links and their points of connection with the cover A are such that ends being carried by the front and said front being pivoted to the bottom, links connecting the lower inner extremities of the ends and the cover and adapted to rotate the cover to bring its free edge to the rear of a vertical line extending through the pivot thereof when the front is fully lowered, substantially as described.
