PARTITION Filed Aug. 29, 1927 I N VEN TOR.
ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 16, 1930 UNHTE STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR H. SAMUELSEN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE HEIL 00., F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN PARTITION Application filed August 29, 1927. Serial No. 216,251.
This invention relates to improvements in partitions for truck or wagon bodies and the like, and oneof the objects of the invention is to provide a novel means of simple con- 6 struction for securing a partition member to the wagon body so that the body will be divided whereby diderent commodities may be hauled and not permitted to mix or run together.
The invention contemplates a novel form of stop means on the truck or wagon body which will hold the partition in locked position when it is desired to dump only the commodity in the end section of the body,
I and a further object of the invention is to provide means for raising the partition so as to disengage it from the stop means so that the partition may freely swing to allow the contents of the inner section to be emptied.
A more specific object is to provide angle brackets secured to the sides of the wagon body and corresponding clip members on the lower portion of the partition for engaging the angle brackets when in the locked position, and means for raising the partition out of engagement with the angle brackets to allow it to swing freely when the contents of the inner section are to be dumped.
A further object of this invention is to pr0- vide a locking means for the partition which will not become clogged up with sand or dirt which frequently occurs when such commodities are carried.
The invention consists in the novel arrangements, constructions and devices to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects as will appear from the following description of a certain preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the partition embodying the principles of this invention in combination with a truck body, parts of the body being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the partition in the raised or open position; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the partition as attached to a truck body, the body being shown in section, and parts of the partition being broken away.
Referring now to the drawing in which the same reference numerals designate the same parts in all of the views, the invention is illustrated in connection with a wagon or truck body comprising a bottom portion 6 and side portions 7. The respective sides of the bod are preferably provided with hori zontal ange portions 8 which form supports for hearing members 9. The bearing members 9 have journaled therein eccentric members 10 which are formed with alined apertures 11 for the insertion of a transversely ext-ending rod 12, the rod being rigidly secured to each eccentric member, and also at one end to a lever 13.
A partition member 14 extending transversely across the wagon body is hingedly mounted on the rod 12, preferably by providing a plurality of vertically extending hinge members 15 riveted or otherwise secured to the partition member, the central portions of which are provided with loop portions 16 which encircle the rod 12. Angle brackets 17 secured to each side of the truck body and extending therefrom are adapted to be engaged by clips 18 when the partition is in the lowered or locked position.
It will now be apparent from the foregoing description, assuming the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, that when the rod is turned by the lever, the eccentric members 10 will also be turned in their respective bearings and the partition member will be raised sufficiently for the clips 18 to disengage the angle brackets 17 so that the partition may swing outwardly, that is, in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, to permit the commodity which has been held in place by the partition member to flow outwardly underneath the partition. The arrangement is particularly useful and convenient in connection with wagon or truck bodies adapted to be tilted so that their contents may be discharged through the rear end when in a tilted position. When so used the partition member will readily swing to open position under the weight of the load bearing against it so that the load will be quickly discharged. When the truck body is lowered, the partition member swings by gravity backwardly against the angle bracket 17 and by turning V the lever, the partition maybe forced downabovethe bottom thereof; and means for Wardly until the clip member 18 engages the angle bracket 17. v
ItWlll be obviousthat a plurality of such partition members may be applied to a Wagon or trnck bo'dy if; desired. The principles of the invention may also be. applied to the p I end gate'of' the agon or truck bodyas will be obyionsto those skilled in; the art. I I
,.-*What"I claim is:" I i In atruck body having a p and integral side Walls, brackets rigidly con '1, nected directly tothe side Walls; closely ad- V H 'jacentthe bottom portion and eXt'ending'in-f ,wardly towards each other, a partition member having forwardly projecting clips positioned to-latchthe partition in closed'position to thenpper edges of said brackets, eccentric members forpivotally connecting the upper portion of the partition to'the upper portions of the side-Walls and for bodily lifting the partitionto unlatch the partition from the brackets,*'said (bracket and I clip connections 1 being locatedto connect the lower portions of the partition directly'to t'he 'side walls of thebody at points ,of greatest strain and turning the eccentrics.
