SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,818, dated May 10, 1898.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPH Ho'rz, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-k ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in dumping-wagons such as are used for conveying coal, grain, broken stone, and like commodities, and more especially to that class of such wagons wherein the dumping devices are arranged to discharge a load at the side of the wagon, as distinguished from those which discharge at the rear end thereof.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the ap` pended claims.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in vertical cross-section of a wagon-body and dumping device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan section thereof,.taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing one of the dumping devices open and the other closed. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the central part of the wagon-body and the dumping devices. Fig. 4 is a detail View from beneath of a connecting-bar at the center of the wagon, together with the inner ends of the dumpingiiaps, these parts being shown as removed from the wagon-body. Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the said drawings, A A indicate the sides, and A the bottom, of the wagonbody. The bottom of the body embraces two cross-pieces, of which A2 and A3 are located near the middle of the' body and separated from each other by a space in which the dumping-chutes are located. At the front and rear of the space between the cross-pieces A2 A3 the bottom is formed by planking A4 A5, which terminates at said cross-pieces. The sides A of thebody consist, mainly, of longitudinal planks A6, which extend from end to end of the body and serve as the principal means of giving longitudinal strength or stiffness to the same. To the upper edges of said pieces A6 are secured outwardly-extending inclined boards A7, and to the outer edges of said boards A7 are secured other vertical boards A8, these part-s being disposed in a familiar manner to give greater capacity to the upper part of the body.
The parallel cross-pieces A2 A3 at the middle of the body are placed at such distances apart as to afford transversely extending spaces or openings wide enough for the dumping-chutes, and said cross-pieces are connected with each other at the middle line of the body only by a longitudinal frame piece or member there located, .which aords two openings for the dumping-chutes, one of which is located at either side of the bottom of the body. Such centrallongitudinal frame-piece is herein shown as formed by means of a metal bar C, which is bolted at its ends to the crosspieces A2 A3, said bar for this purpose being adapted to extend at its ends over the top surface of said cross-pieces and being provided with depending vertical iianges c c, Fig. 4, which fit against the inner flat surfaces of said cross-pieces. VThe means shown for attaching the bar C to the cross-pieces consists of vertical bolts c c', having at their upper ends countersunk heads engaging the end portions of the bar which extend over the crosspieces. v
The dumping-chutes referred to consist of hinged bottom pieces or flaps D D and stationary side walls E E, said flaps when closed forming the part of the bottom of the wagonbody andthe side pieces E being arranged to depend from the bottom of the body parallel and in contact with the side edges of said flaps. Said liaps are hinged at their inner ends to the central frame-bar C, so that when their outer ends are lowered the flaps them-V selves,together with the stationary side pieces E, will form chutes through which the contents of the wagon may be discharged at a point at either side of the body. In order to form a longer chute and to better deliver the material to be discharged at the desired point beside the wagon,r the fiaps D are extended beyond the sidewalls A6 of the wagon-body, but preferably not so far 'as to extend beyond the other projecting parts of the body, and the ends of the iiaps which project outside of the said side pieces A6 are provided with vertical side lianges D', which rise from the side edges thereof and form with the side plates E, when the liap is lowered, a continuous side wall to the chute. flaps and are pivotally engaged-with the bar C by means of pivot-pins d. Said bar O is shown, Figs. 1, 2, and 4, as made of cast metal and as having side iianges c2, between which are formed transverse webs c3 c3, through which the pivot-pins d are inserted, one pivotpin serving as a pivot for one of the hinges of both iiaps, which hinges are arranged to i overlap at their butt-ends in the. mannerr illustrated. The said flaps are preferably covered on their top surface by metal plates d', while the flanges D are desirably pro' vided on their lower edges with flanges d2, which are bolted to the side margins of the f flaps.
Locking .devices for holding the iiaps D in their elevated or closed positions are provided as follows: F F are swinging hooks .or detents which are pivoted to the wagon-body at `points above the ends of the Iiaps in such manner that they may be swung toward or from the iiaps and will engage the latter when` in their vertical position. As herein shown,
each detent F consists of a metal casting f,
having a lateral projecting part which extends inwardly beneath the bottom of the flap and is adjustably held on the rod by two nuts f4 f5 and a metal rod or shank f', the upper end of which is provided with .an eye f2, through which it is pivotally connected with metal ears f3, secured to the overhanging board A7 of the body. For the purpose of locking said detentF from outward movement when engaged with the flap a locking device is provided,`
consisting .of `a hook G, which is movablyconnected to the detent F and adapted for en-- gagement with a part of or upon the wagonbody. As herein shown, the hook G is attached to a sleeve G', which embraces and slides vertically upon the rods f of the detent, while the hook G constitutes a rigid projection on said sleeve. Said hook is herein shown as adapted to engagea shaft H, which in the device shown constitutes the part of a mechanism vfor lifting the flap; but in the absence of such shaft H any suitably-located part may be employed for `engagement with thesaid hook. The hook G obviouslyinsures the continuous en gagementof thedetent with the fia-p, notwithstanding the jarring of the wagon in passing over rough places and under similarcircumstances.
Now referring to the device for lifting the same is herein shown as made as follows:
Said shaft H is arranged horizontally above the outer end of the flap and is mounted in bearings-h 7L, attached to the vertical bracerods I I, which extend from the outer ends of the cross-pieces A2 A3 upwardly to the part of the wagon-bod y which overhangs the same and are attached at their upper ends to the board A7. Said shaft H is provided at one end with a hand-crank H', by which the shaft may be turned when desired. Secured to the outer end of the fiap D, at either side thereof, are lifting-chains J J, which are attached at their upper ends to and adapted to be wound upon the shaft H. The lower ends of said chains are herein shown as engaged with metal eyebars jj, attached to the side anges D' of the flaps, Said shaft H, arranged as described, obviously constitutes a windlass by which the lifting-chains may be wound up and the iiaps elevated to close the bottom of .the wagon.
A hook K is pivoted to the side of the body at a point where it may be easily engaged with the crank H, said hook enabling the l crank to be held or locked from movement and the rod H from turning backward when it is desired to sustain the flaps in` an intermediate position. The iiaps are supported when in their lowermost position by the said chains J J, as seen in Fig. 2.
The side plates E are shown as attached at their upper edges to the inner faces of the cross-pieces A2 A3, and in order to support the lower ends of said plates and hold them rigidly in place inclined braces E are attached to the outer faces of said plates and extend upwardly to the outer faces of the said cross-pieces, to which they are secured. The edges of the planking A4 A5 above the plates E are protected by an gie-irons e c, Fig. 5, while the side edges .of the iiaps D are similarly protected by angle-irons d3, which embrace the edges of the iiaps land fit against the covering-plate d.
The device described as a whole :obviously affords a simple and convenient means by which the contents of a wagon-body may be discharged at either side thereof, the location of the discharging-chutes at the middle of the body having the advantage of lessening the manual work of discharging a load, inasmuch as .the material which does not fall in the chute when the same is open will need to be shoveled at most only half of the length of the wagon-body. A special advantage is obtained :by :the construction by which the sides of the wagon-bod y are continuous and the open-ings leading to the chutes are `entirely within the bottom of the body, as this construction affords an :ample opening for the exit of the contents of the body without greatly weakening the same at its center, the longitudinal strength of the body being afforded mainly by the side rpieces thereof and not by the bottom. A special advantage is also obtained iiap, of which the shaft H forms a part, the

the parts of the bottom at either side of the chute-openings and to also afford pivotal support for the inner ends of the flaps which form the bottoms of the chutes.
The construction in which the upper surface of the flaps lies flush with the upper surface of the stationary part of the bottom of the wagon when said flaps are in their closed position is of great importance in the practical use of the wagon.` Said construction, while affording a simple and convenient means by which the contents of the wagon may be discharged from either side thereof, does not in any way interfere with the use of the wagon for other and ordinary purposes. In other words, if for any reason it be not convenient to discharge the contents of the wagon by means of the mechanism herein described said wagon may be unloaded in the usual manner and with the same facility as though the bottom were made permanent in all its parts. The general use 0f the wagon is therefore not impaired, as it would be if the dumping-mechanism were such as to interrupt continuity of the bottom thereof.
I claim as my inventionl. A wagon provided with a discharge-chute consisting of a flap which forms part of the bottom of the body and side plates depending from said body, said iiap being extended beyond the side wall of the body and fitting at its side edges at its part inside of said wall against said side plates to form the inner part of the chute and being provided outside of the body with lateral upwardly-extending anges which supplement said side plates when the flap is in its lowermost position to form the outer part of the chute which eX- tends outside of said body.
2. A wagon-body provided with a discharging-chute consisting of a hinged flap which forms part of the bottom of the body and is located iiush with said bottom when in its closed position, depending side plates, and means forlocking the flap in its elevated position, comprising a detent hinged to the body above the end of the iap and a movable lockin g-hook connected with the detent and adapted to engage a stationary holding part of or upon the body.
3. In combination with a wagon-body, a hinged flap which forms part of the bottom of the body, depending side plates at the side edges of the iiap, a detent hinged to the body above the free end of the ap and a sleeve sliding on the detent and provided with a rigid hook, said hook being adapted to engage a stationary part of or upon the body.
4. In combination with a Wagon-body having overhanging side walls, a hinged flap which forms part of the bottom of the body, depending side plates forming with the flap a discharge-chute, a vertical standard connected with said overhanging portion of the side wall on one side of the body and means for lifting the free end of the flap consisting of a shaft mounted transversely in said standard and provided with a hand-crank and chains attached to the side margins of the flap and engaging said shaft.
5. A wagon-body the bottom of which is provided with a central, transverse opening, a central, longitudinal connecting-bar which joins the parts of the body on either side of said opening and is flush with the bottom of the body, said body having discharge-chutes formed by aps which are hinged at the center of the body to said connecting-bar and form when their outer ends are elevated part of the bottom of the body and having continuous side pieces by which longitudinal strength or stiffness is given to the body.
6. A wagon-body embracing continuous longitudinal side pieces, two parallel cross-pieces forming central openings for dischargingchutes, a central, longitudinal bar extending between and connecting said cross-pieces with its top surface flush with the bottom of the body and flaps hinged to said bar between the cross-pieces and constructed to lie iiush with and form when closed parts of the bottom of the wagon-body.
7. In combination with a wagon-body, having parallel cross-pieces forming chute-openings and ,hinged iiaps located between said cross-pieces, of a central metal connectingbar attached at its ends to the cross-pieces and provided with centrally-arranged pivotpins engaged Aby the hinge members of both flaps to pivotally support the same, the said bar being so located as to support said flaps flush with the bottom of the bodywhen the latter are in their closed position.
` 8. In combination with a wagon-body, having parallel cross-pieces forming chute-openings and hinged flaps located between said cross-pieces, of a central metal connectingbar attached at its ends to the cross-pieces and provided with centrally-arranged pivotpins engaged by the hinged members of both flaps' to pivotally support the same, said bars being made of cast metal and provided with lateral flanges and with transverse webs through which said pivot-pins are inserted.
9. A Wagon-body comprising parallel crosspieces, between which are formed openings for discharging-chutes, hinged iiaps located between the said cross-pieces and serving when elevated to close said openings, depending side plates attached to the inner faces of said cross-pieces and forming the side walls of the discharging-chute when the iiaps are lowered and braces for the said depending plates secured to the lower parts of said plates and extending upwardly to and outside of the cross-pieces.
