PIERSON COPE, OF PERRYOPOLIS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKETS FOR FENCE-BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,256, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom lit may concern.-
Be it known that I, PIERsoN COPE, of Perryopolis, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Fence-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
My invention has relation to fences; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of brackets supporting the horizontal fence-bars, said brackets being provided with pivoted blocks, upon which the bars rest, and which are designed to allow the bars to be conveniently raised and lowered, substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the horizontal bars of a fence-panel; B, a post set in the ground or in a sill; and O C', the irnproved brackets, consisting each of a pair of boards of, say, five feet in length, six inches in width, and two inches in thickness, embracing between them the rectangular pivoted blocks a, arranged at equal distances apart The bracket C is pivoted to the post B by a pin or rod, E, passing through its upper end. The bracket C is secured to a stone or stationary block, F. The blocks a support the bars A in horizontal positions when the panel is closed; but in letting down the bars, to allow cattle to pass through, the blocks turn in their pivots, thus adapting themselves to the inclination of the bars, and enablingthem to be easily handled and disposed.
The ends supported by the brackets C' should be let down in most cases, as the brackets O, being pivoted, will give or swing and allow the bars to be pushed back far enough to make a good-sized opening.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The fence-bracket C having the pivoted blocks a, in combination with the horizontal bars A, substantially as specified.
2. The bracket C pivoted to the post B,
and holding the pivoted blocks a, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
PIERSON COPE. Witnesses: J osLAH KURTZ, JOHN KURTZ.
