' Sp fionoof Lette s iete t. Patented June 1 19 ,20.
Application filed February 16. 1920." Serial No. 358.818, 1
bull whom it may 6071067'77.
Be it known that I, NATHAN SLOANE, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Handle for Handbags, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to ladies hand bags and more particularly relates to the bag handle, the general object of the invention being to provide a handle combining a rigid arm-receiving ring with a flexible element adapted to connect the same in a novel manner with the bag frame so that the two jointly form a handle possessing advantages and promoting convenience in the secure carrying and handling of the bag as will more clearly appear from the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a bag handle embodying my invention, showing the same in use on a bag frame, a bag being shownin part;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation largely diagrammatic, the view being given to show the manner of uniting the flexible element with the ring;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective showing one means for connecting the handle with the bag frame.
In the illustrated example a known form of frame A is provided, the sides of which are hinged together as at a in the usual manner, a portion of the bag proper being indicated at B, and the letter C indicating members on the frame to which the handle is secured.
In producing a handle in accordance with my invention, a length of flexible material 10 is provided, which in the preferred form and advantageously,- consists of a twisted silk cord. A ring 11 is secured to the ele-' ment 10 to be disposed above the same as follows: The cord 10 is wound a plurality of times at its central portion about the ring 11 at the bottom of the latter, thereby forming convolutions 12 in the cord through which the ring passes. Y The ends of the cord are passed through the convolutions 12 in opposite directions and the cord drawn tightly onto the ring. The opposite free ends of the cord are connected with the members C or equivalent members on the bag frame. In the illustrated example the cord 10 terminates in ornamental knots 13, the knots including terminal loops 13 which are connected by a split ring D or 7 other suitable means.
With a handle formed as described the arm of the user may be passed through the ring 11, the cord portion 10 of the handle being of a length so that the total handle will suspend the bag at the proper distance. Or, the ring 11 may be grasped by the hand in carrying the bag. In opening the bag the ring may be swung downwardly with the convolutions 12 as a center, so that the ring will lie alongside the cord portion 10 of the handle andwith the top portion of the ring adjacent to the frame A. The
hand may now be passed also through the.
cord portion between the diverging ends thereof. This disposition of the ring and cord portion of the handle may be readily brought about and the cord portion grasped by the hand, one hand and arm thus firmly holding the bag, making swaying of the same impossible and leaving the other hand free for cooperation in the opening of the bag or for the placing of articles in the bag or removing articles, and at the same time the user has the assurance that if the bag is released by the hand grasping the cord and the bag frame, the bag will nevertheless remain suspended on the arm. Also, the mode of connecting the handle and ring permits not only of the ring being grasped by the hand oran arm passed therethrough but the ring may be swung down alongside the cord portion and the two grasped by the hand or the arm may be passed through both thereby affording a multiplicity of ways of carrying the bag. Furthermore, the mode of connecting the ring and cord portion promotes the convenience with which either the cord portion or ring or both may be grasped, while it affords as well a secure connection between the ring and cord. portion and materially tails herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: r
A handle for hand bags including a flexible element constituting the lower portion of the handle and adapted to be connected with a bag, and a ring thereon at the top,
10 said element consisting of a continuous length of flexible material presenting c011- volutions at the approximate center thereof, and Wound about the ring at a side thereof, and end portions having means to secure the same to the bag, the end portions being continued in opposite directions through said convolutions, so that the convolutions Wind about said end' portions 'as Well as about the ring.
NATHAN SLOANE.
