H. A. SAYFORD CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT Filed Oct. 6, 1942 Patented July 18, 1944 I CHRlSTMAS TREEI ORNANEENT Howard A. Sayford, Bloomfield, N. J.,assignor'to Frank M. Sayford Company, Inc., Brooklyn,

' Application October 6, 1942, Serial No. 461,005

1 Claim.

This invention relates to Christmas tree ornaments and more particularly to animproved cap structure therefor.

In Christmas tree ornaments at present in use, the ornament, which may be a ball or other hollow glass body, is provided with an inverted metallic cup-shaped cap throu h which a combined eye and spring clamp is extended, the eye providing means for securing a suspension element to the ornament in addition to limiting the inward movement of the clamp with respect to the cap. It is an object of this invention to provide an improved suspension means for the ornament which may be formed out of non-metallic material.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved cap and suspension means for an ornament of this kind which will not become loosened by jarring of the tree, as is the case with prior devices.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a cap which will permit the elimination of the necessity for the commonly used wire 8 hook or some other medium as a link between the ornament cap eye and the tree.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved cap which may be constructed out of cardboard, the center of the cap being formed with string clamping tangs to firmly hold the suspension string, the latter being in the form of a loop with a knot disposed on the inside of the cap and bearing against the outward bent tangs so that the string loop knot is clamped tightly against the inside of the cap and the string loop is thus prevented from being inadvertently withdrawn through the cap and into the inside of the ornament after'the cap is attached thereto.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved cap structure which may be easily colored or decorated to provide either harmonizing or contrasting colors with respect to the ornament.

To the foregoing objects and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of an ornament, embodying this invention;

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line A fibrous cap, generally designated as M, is

adapted to be secured over the nipple I2, and includes an upper wall l5, and a substantially frusto-conical side wall or skirt it. The cap It is adapted to be firmly secured to the outer side of the nipple i2, by means of an adhesive l3. The adhesive I3 is of such character as to tightly hold the cap [4 on the glass nipple or neck It. The top wall [5 of the cap I4 is formed with a pair of intersecting slots H and I8 which provide a plurality of radially arranged tangs l9. looped suspension cord or string 20 is adapted to be extended through the cap I4, being extended through the slots l1 and I8, and the string or suspension member 20 is formed with a knot 2| which is positioned on the inner side of the cap M,

In practice the tangs l9 are of such a size that the knot 2i will normally prevent the cord or string 20 from being pulled out of the cap. The strands of the cord or string 26 are also tightly gripped between adjacent tangs l9 so that the cord or string 20 will not slip into the interior of the ornament. The cap is preferably formed of cardboard or other fibrous or nonmetallic material which has a degree of resiliency, so that the weight of the ornament H3 will be properly supported by the tangs 19. In the drawing the tangs I9 are shown as being bent outwardly of the cap, the amount of the bend being slightly exaggerated.

In Figure 4 of the drawing, there is disclosed a disc-shaped blank of which the cap M is formed, the blank being designated Ma, and the blank 14a is thenpressed to provide the configuration shown in Figures 1 and 3. The marginal edges of the top wall of the cap are shown by dotted line 22 in Figure 4 and the skirt It is designated 3a in the blank, whereas the top wall is designated by the numeral l5a.

A suspension means for a hollow glass ornament, for use on Christmas trees, constructed according to this invention, may easily and cheaply be made out of cardboard or other fibrous material which may be colored or otherwise decorated to either provide a contrasting or a harmonizing color with respect to the color of the body ll of the ornament.

By adhesively securing the cap M on the nipple 12, the cap cannot accidentally be pulled OK as where the tree or branches thereof are jarred or shaken and the string or cord 20 may he slipped over a tree branch or, if desired, the looped string 20 may be out and then tied about the desired portion of the tree.

What I claim is: In a tree ornament consisting of a hollow glass ball formed with a reduced neck of slightly tapered configuration and open at its upper end,

a suspension means for the ball comprising a pension cord adapted to be extended through the said slots and a knot formed on the end thereof positioned on the inner side of said cap, said "tangs being of such size as to hold said cord from being pulled \out of the cap, the strands forming said cord being tightly gripped between adjacent *tangs so that the cord will not slip into the interior of the ornament.

HOWARD A. SAYFORD.
