UNITED STATES BARRON J. SLOAN, 0F NEW BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
ARTICLE HOLDER FOR HATS.
Application filed February 20, 1926.
This invention relates to devices designed for supporting articles and particularly to a device designed to be placed within the crown ot a hat for the purpose ot' supporting pencils, cigars, cigarettes or other articles within the crown.
The general object of the invention is to provide in connection with a hat having a crown, and preferably a stift crown, a transversely extending elastic band disposed across the under face ot the under side of the crown and adapted to embrace articles such as pencils, cigars, cigarettes, etc.
A further object is to provide an elastic trame which may be readily extended within the crown of a hat and which trame supports a double elastic band between the two thicknesses of which articles may be disposed, the ends of this elastic band being preferably connected by a buckle or like device.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereinr Figure 1 is an inside plan view ot a hat having one form of my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a like view to Figure .1 but showing another form ot my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder detached from the hat.
Referring to these drawings in Figure 1, T have illustrated a hat A which as illustrated is a straw hat having a stili crown B and disposed within the crown ot this hat and extending transversely across is an elastic band 10 which may be made ot elastic webbing or like material, and which is stitched to the crown of the hat at opposite points so that cigars, cigarettes, pencils. memoranda or the like may be inserted between the top ot the hat and this elastic band and carried thereby. The band may have printed upon it advertising matter it desired.
ln Fig. 3, T illustrate an elastic band supported by a frame designated generally 11, this trame being` somewhat elliptical in form and preferably formed of a single piece of wire, the opposite end portion. ot the trame being inwardly bent as at 12. A strap ot elastic webbing designated Igenerally 13, is looped over one of these inwardly pressed portions 12 and one end ot the strap is extended over or around the opposite inwardly pressed portion 12. The ends of the strap are connected by means oit a Serial No. 89,747.
hook 141 and an elongated eye 15 or like means. This eye is mounted upon a cross bar 16 through which the bight portion ot the elastic band passes and this cross bar may bc engaged with the rubber band in any suitable manner as t'or instance, by a cross bar 17 having prongs extending into one end of the rubber band or otherwise connected therewith. This will permit the rubber band to be taken up when its elasticity becomes reduced. Tt will be seen that articles such as pencils, cigars, cigarettes, etc., may be readily inserted between thc two lengths or stretches of the rubber band and securely held within the hat. The hook anc eveengagement of one end of the band with the other end will permit the band to be opened up and the articles plated between the two stretches ot the band and then the two ends ot the band connected again. This rubber band 13 may have a surface such that advertising matter may be printed thereon. I do not wish to be limited to the particular means for engaging the end ot one of the thicknesses of rubber with the other thickness as various clips for this purpose might be used. Tt will be seen that the elasticity of the wire trame will hold the trame in place within the crown of the hat in the manner shown in Figure 2.
I claim 1. As an article ot manufacture an article support 'tor hats comprising an elastic wire trame adapted to be disposed in and eX- pand within the crown ot a hat, and a stretched band of elastic material carried by said frame, the band being folded to provide two parallel portions, the ends of the band being` detachably engaged with each other, the elastic band constituting means for supporting articles between them. y
2. As an. article ot manufacture. an article support for hats comprising` an elastic wire trame termed to provide two opposed inwar lly curved cross bar portions and two opposed resilient outwardly bowed portions connecting the ends of said cross bar portions, and a stretched band ot elastic material carried by said trame. said frame being adapted to be disposed within the crown of a hat and expand against said crown to thereby support the elastic band in proximity to the inner face of the crown.
In testimony 'whereof I hereunto my signature. Y
