IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE PlPE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,207, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM KEARNEY,
of Belleville, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Pipe-Tongs,
of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to improvement in pipe-tongs, of the class in which one jaw is made adjustable by means of a screw, but is more particularly a modification of a device described in the patent of H. N. Smade, dated August 29, 1871. The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable jaw which shall be capable of adapting itself, within moderate limits, to the object to be'seized or held, and of being readily adjusted to various positions, while the construction and arrangement shall be simple and inexpensive.
A and B are the handles, which are pivoted to each other in the ordinary manner. Upon the forward end of one of the handles, as A, is formed a jaw, O, which is curved inward and is made smooth upon its inner side.
The
inner side of the end part of the jaw G is made straight or nearly so, and at right angles, or nearly at right angles, with the length of the tongs, as shown in Fig. 1. In the end of the other arm or handle, as B, is formed a screwhole to receive the screw D, to the head of which is hinged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the other jaw F, upon the end of which is formed a face curved nearly in the arc of a circle and having teeth formed upon it, as shown in Fig. 1. By this construction the jaw E will adjust itself to the pipe or other object to be turned so as to grasp it firmly. The screw D enables the jaw E to be adjusted according to the size of the pipe or other object to be grasped and turned by simply turning it in one or the other direction.
Havingthus described m yinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As the improvement described, the combination, with the hooked jaw (J, of the jaw E,
hinged to the screw D, whose stem enters a socket in the end of the handle or lever B, all as shown and described.
