Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11,1920.
T) aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. Muns- FIJLDER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Damper Controls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improved damper control and refers more particularly to an automatic damper control for furnaces, stoves or the like.
In furnaces or like fuel burning devices it is usual to provide a damper by means of which the passage of products of combustion through the outlet pipe can be variably restricted. However in putting fuel into the combustion chamber through the fuel door there is danger of smoke or gases coming out through the fuel door opening if the damper is in its closed or partially closed position. It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide an automatic control for this damper which will adjust the damper to its open position simultaneously with the opening of the fuel door and which will preferably automatically return the damper upon the closing of the door.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a damper opener operable from the front of the furnace or similar apparatus, which mechanism can be operated either dependent upon the movement of the door or independent of the movement of the door; to provide an adjustable operating member in the automatic damper control, which member can be moved to an inoperative position so that the opening of the door will not in any way affect the position of the damper; to provide a construction which can be readily adapted to furnaces, stoves or like constructions now in use; and in general to provide a new and simplified damper control of the character above referred to.
In the drawings:
Figure '1 is a front elevational view of a furnace embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the construction shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an' enlarged detail view of the fuel door end of the apparatus;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail View of the damper end of the apparatus.
Describing in detail the construction shown in the drawings, A designates a furnace having at the front the usual fuel door B pivoted at C and C. At the rear of this furnace there is provided a flue connection D which is controlled by a damper E mounted on a crank shaft F.
The present invention contemplates an arrangement whereby the damper will be operated in accordance with the opening and closing of the furnace door. For this purpose I employ a crank shaft Gr which is carried in brackets G and G At its lower end this crank shaft has an arm H extending over the upper edge of the fuel door B and between pins J and J on the door B- At its upper end the crank shaft G has an offset portion K connected by a rod K to an offset portion F of the crank shaft F.
The arrangement as above described is such that when the member J is in its operative position (shown in full lines in Fig. 1) and the fuel door B is opened, the arm H is swung outward, thus rotating the crank shaft G and pulling forward the conneoting rod K. This in turn will rotate the damper arm F and automatically open the damper. When the door is closed the reverse operation takes place, namely the connecting rod K is forced rearwardly and closes the damper.
In order to permit the apparatus to be adjusted to an inoperative position, when 1t is not desired to control the damper, the pin J can be swung about its pivot J to the position shown in dotted. lines in Fig. 1, and the crank shaftG and its crank ends K and H also swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The rear damper may then be opened and closed independently of the door. Thus at the will of the operator the damper control can be operated either independently of the opening of the fuel door or automatically by the movement of such door.
While I have shown and described the invention in connection with the damper control it is obvious that various other controls can be automatically operated in a similar manner; and various changes in the details of construction made within the scope of my in ention- What I claim as my invention is In a fuel burning device, the combination With a control damper, and a hinged fuel door, of a damper operating means com-.
prising a shaft having a connection to actuate the damper when said shaft is rotated axially, said shaft having an offset portion, and said fuel door having pin like members adapted to engage said offset of the shaft so as to operate the damper automatically with the movement of the fuel door, one of said pins being adjustable to a position outside of the path of the movement of said oflset portion for permitting the automatic operation of the damper to be rendered in- 15 operative.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
