  • My invention relates to stoves, and'the object of my invention is to provide a combination coal and gas stove which may be used with either fuel, coal or gas, and changed from one to the other without removing any loose parts, and in which a gas oven burner and gas oven bottom are provided, which burner and gas oven bottom may be moved out of the way when the stove is used with coal as a fuel, leaving the oven absolutely unimpaired and unobstructed; and in which the gas burners do not pass through the flues; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS P. G. Non- STRAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of Albany, 1n the county of Albany and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stoves, and'the object of my invention is to provide a combination coal and gas stove which may be used with either fuel, coal or gas, and changed from one to the other without removing any loose parts, and in which a gas oven burner and gas oven bottom are provided, which burner and gas oven bottom may be moved out of the way when the stove is used with coal as a fuel, leaving the oven absolutely unimpaired and unobstructed; and in which the gas burners do not pass through the flues; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The stove, A, is provided at one end, B, with a grate mounted in any convenient way for burning coal; The other end, C, of the stovevis provided with a burner, Y, through which gas is conveyed by means of the pipes, (Z, d, in order that the stove may be used for cooking by the use of the gas burner.
I have placed in the'oven a burner, E,"gas' entering the burner through the pipe, F, the burner, E, having an arm, P, at its end which extends at right angles to the axis of the burner and is attached to the link, Q, which in turn is attached to the lever, N, at its end, 0, the lever, N, being fulcrumed at 'n to the bracket, 5, in the rear wall, a, of the oven. For the purpose of raising the gas oven bottom and its connections, together with the burner, I fulcrum the lever, N, at n in the bracket, 5, attached to the rear wall, a, of the stove and attach the end, 0, of said lever to the link, Q, which is secured to the arm, P, formed on the end of the burner pipe, F. Then the burner and gas oven bottom are in the position shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, the lever is in the pothan understood that the plate, M, is folded back of the gas oven bottom, G, by the raising of the oven bottom as heretofore described, when the plate, M, will also occupy the position shown by dotted lines in Fig.2.
By means of the valve, V, operated by the valve handle, W, I may turn on or shut off the admission of gas to the pipe, F, from the pipe, 7. The handle, W, is preferably rightangled being provided with anarm, T. The end of the arm, T, has formed thereon or attached thereto a plate, to, which is so adjusted that when the gas is turned off by the movement of the handle, N, the late, 10, will be in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, and the portion, 0, of the lever,
N, will, when the gas oven bottom is raised, prevent the handle, W, which operates the valve, from moving suliiciently to turn on the gas, because the plate, to, will .come in contact with the lever. This will prevent gas being turned on when the stove is in condition for use as a coal stove.
In order to provide for the combustion of gas in the oven whenthe oven door is closed, I arrange an opening, 2%, in the bottom of the oven and at one side of the opening I hinge at 23 a damper, 22. To the damper,
22, I hinge a link, 21, which link is attached to a lug, 20, depending from the ovenplate, M. When the plate, M, is ina horizontal position shown by full lines in Fig. 2, the
damper is open, permitting air to enter theoven; when the oven bottom is raised and the oven plate, M, is folded back, the damper is closed.
I provide near the top of the oven a damper, L, which is a plate mounted in the upper rear portion of the oven adapted to close an opening, R, leading into the flue of the stove, and which will be closed when the oven bottom, G, and the portion, H, are raised for the purpose of allowing the stove to be used with coal fuel. The hinged portion, I-I, engages the plate forming the damper, L, and raises it against the sides of the opening, R, to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The spring, 1, may be used for the'purpose of throwing the damper, L, out of engagement with the sides of the opening, R, after the oven bottom has been placed in a horizontal position, providing it does not fall out by gravity.
. By my arrangement the draft of the stove,
when it is heated by other fuel than gas, is
not interfered with by pipes runn ng th rough the fiues or in any other way. There is no opportunity for an explosion occurring because of the accumulation of gas in the oven. The arrangement of the vent valves in the oven is such that when the stove is to be heated by the burning of other fuel and the gas oven bottom is raised, the air vents are closed, and when the gas is turned off and the gas oven bottom is raised,

2. In a combination gas and coal stove provided with an oven, a gas oven bottom composed of two pieces hinged together and a plate hinged in the back of the oven ad apted to assume a horizontal position forming a prolongation of the rest of the gas oven bottom; a gas burner; and means exterior of thestove for raising said burner and each portion of the gas oven bottom simultaneously, removing them out of the way when the stove is to be heated with coal instead of gas. I
3. In a combination gas and coal stove provided with an oven, a gas oven bottom; a burner attached thereto; dampers for opening and closing air vents leading from the oven; and means exterior of the oven for raising the gas ovenbottom and burner and closing said dampers simultaneously.
4. In a combination gas and coal stove provided with an oven, a gas oven plate extending partly across the oven from front to rear; an additional portion hinged to said plate forming a gas oven bottom; an oven plate hinged to the rear of the stove adapted to rest in a horizontal position forming a continuation of the said first mentioned gas oven plate; a gas burner to which said gas oven bottom is attached and by which it is supported; a gas pipe connected with said 1 if u fulcrumed, so arranged that by the move-= ment of the bracket the gas burner and oven plate may be raised to a vertical position, and the hinged portion brought in contact with the back of the oven and bent at an angle to the oven bottom proper when in its verticalposition, said oven plate folded back against the rear of the oven by the movement of the said oven plate to its vertical position.
5. In a combination gas and coal stove provided with an oven, a gas oven bottom: a burner attached thereto; means exterior of the stove for raising the gas oven bottom; means for opening and closing air vents in the oven simultaneously with the raising and lowering of the gas oven bottom; with.
means for preventing the turning on of the gas when the oven bottom is raised, substantially as described.
6. In a combination range, the combina-= tion of an oven, a burner, a shield for the burner, said shield and burner being mount-- ed to fold into substantially parallelism to and in close proximity with the rear wall of the oven.
7. In a combination range, the combination of an oven, a burner, a shield for the burner, said shield and burner being mounted to fold into substantially parallelism to and in close proximity with the rear Wall of the oven, and means operable from without the oven for moving said shield and burner into and out of operative relation with the oven.
8. In a combination range, the combination of a burner pivoted to fold against the rear wall thereof, said burner having a portion extending Without the oven, a shield pivoted to fold against the rear wall of the oven, a lever fulerumed without the oven, and a connection between said portion of the burner without the oven and said lever for actuating the burner upon an actuation of the lever.
9. In a combination range, the combination with the oven, at burner,'a shield therefor pivotally connected to foldinto substantially parallelism with the rear wall thereof, said shield being formed of two sections pivotally connected together, for the purpose described.
