COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
Application filed May 2, 1914. Serial No. 835,829.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT J. LINDE- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improve,
ments in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to combined solid fuel and gas burning stoves designed for baking and over fire cooking, its object being to economically provide simple, compact, seam-tight and efiicient stoves of the kind stated, each constructedto permit the use of either solid or gas fuel without necessitating the removal or replacement of any of its parts, and in which both kinds of said fuel may be utilized at the same time; a novel flue system of the stove serving for ample draft for the combustion of the solid fuel, gas or both, as well as to economize space for chambers in whichare located the gas burners for oven heating and over fire cooking, said flue system being such that none of the products of combustion of the solid fuel can enter said cham bers.
In view of the foregoing my invention consists in structural peculiarities of the combined solid fuel and gas burning stove herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification.
Figure I of the drawings represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a. combined solid fuel'and gas burning stove in accordance with my invention, the section being indicated by line 1l in Figs. 2 and 3; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the stove indicated by line 2-2 in Figs. 1 and 3, parts being broken away; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of said stove indicated by line 3-3 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a sectional view indicated by line H in Figs. 3 and 5, and illustrating a chamber containing an oven heating gas- I burner; Fig. 5, a horizontal section indicated by line 5-5 in Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a View similar to Fig. 4,. omitting the gas-burner and illustrating a combined vertically adjustable damper and deflector element of said chamber in elevated position, and Fig.
7. a horizontal section indicated by line 77 in Fig. 6. v
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 8
- top frame ofan angular combined solid fuel and gas burning stove in which my improvements are embodied. The major portion 9 of the bottom is preferably sheet-steel, and the remainder 9' ofsaid bottom is a somewhat elevated cast-metal housing adjacent to one corner of the stove-body. Each of the walls 10 and 11 of the stove preferably comprises a pair of parallel steel sheets at a suitable interval apart, and interposed insulation 13 of asbestos or other suitable material. There is preferably insulated seamoining of the sheet-metal of the bottom and walls of the stove, and a continuous depending flange of the top frame of said stove is riveted in between the metal sheets of said walls, all as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, this construction being designed to provide joints that remain air-tight, regardless of expansion and contraction of the stovebody.
end wall of the stove-body to increase the area of flue-space hereinafter more particularly specified. The height of the partition is less than the distance between the bottom and top of the stove-body and its upper end corners with thetop l6of said bake-oven.
Detachablv supported in connection with brackets 17 in the space between the partition 14 and the adjacent end wall of the stove, is a fire-box 18 provided with a grate for the support of solid fuel, the grate shown being one having shaking-members 19. Within the space below the fire-pot it is intended to arrange a'removable receptacle for the reception of ashes from the solid fuel, such a. receptacle being indicated by a dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in practice a front doorway and door for said space is provided.
A portion of the oven-top 16 is depressedas shown at 16' under a curvilinearportion 20 of an ctherwise horizontal plate 20-that constitutes the bottom of a chamber in which to isolategasburners 21, under a grating 22 forming part of the stove top, over fire heating and'cookingbeing donein receptacles set on the grating over the gas-burners. The bottom curve of said chamber is conveniently providedwith a guide 23 fora trash slide 24 under said gas-burners, and the chamber bottom has a depending flange riveted in. between the metal sheets of the adjacent end wall of the stove for the purpose stated in the foregoing with reference to a flange of the top frame of the stove.
The top of the stove over the-horizontal portion ofthe oven therein is shown as comprising twocast- metal plates 25, 26 having interlocking engagement and supported on ing provided at its lower end with outlet ports in register with ports of a circular plate 30 riveted to said Wall. Pivotally diately abovethe'lower offset 14' of its end" centered on the plate 30 is a rotatably adjustable damper 31.for the ports aforesaid, the preferredmeans' for actuating the dam per being hereinafter specified. If preferred, a sliding damper may be employed.
The bottom 15. of the bake-oven is immewall 14 constituting the partition aforesaid, and extending within the space between the oven bottom andthe bottom of the stove as a whole is a cast-metalpreferably cylindrical solid bottom. pot 33 constituting a chamber inwhichtoisolate a gas-burner 34. The lower portion of the wall. of the pot, below the stove bottom, is provided withair-inlet ports,' and a damper 35 for these'inlets is provided'with upper vertical arms 35' for which said not is formed with guide oflsets 33, 33". The pot is provided with upper and lower outer horizontal flanges, and these flanges are riveted in connection with the oven and stovebcttoms. The upper flange ofthe pct fits within a step of a depression ofthe oven bottom flushwith another istep off s'aid depression for the engagement-of a deflector-plate 36"attached to the arms 35' ofthe' damper "35, said 'plate being flush with said "oven bottom when in lowered position. .The links-37 and 38 of toggles are respectiviel connected to'th'e damper 35 .and to a tumbling-rod 39, 39., "which rod .extends. through the offsets 33" of the-p ot 33 and. through" "anend wall of the stove under the" to elevate the damper 35 and deflector plate 36, the flue 29 is opened to. permit circulation of air through the oven, which oven is heated from within by ignited gas emanating from the burner 34. 'lhe. housing 9 is provided with a guide-boss 9 for the pitman 42, as-shown in Fig. 2, and a bearing '43 "for the tumbling-rodis suspended from the stove bottom, as shown in Fig. 3.
.The bottom ofthe pot is notched to provide clearance for the gas-pipe 44 in connection with the burner 34, and the damper and plate connecting arms 35 are of such number and disposition as to insure easy vertical adjustment of said damper and plate. There is close fit ofthe pot-bottom on said gas-pipe.
The pot 33 constitutes a ventilating chamber when open, and when closed, theconfined heated air therein prevents chilling of the deflector plate 36 that is then a portion of the oven bcttom.
From the foregoing it will be understood that there is flue-space extending over the top of the oven then downward and under said oven. This flue-space is open above and below said oven to a back-flue 45. of the stove,'said back-flue being of any suitable construction and adapted for connection with Stovepipe 45" leading to' a chimney. The upperopening from the \flue-space in thestovc to the back-flue is controlled by a swing-damper 46 fast on an outwardly extending operating rodv47 for which bearings are provided in said flue, one of the bearings 48 being shown in Fig. 2, and the operator end of the rod is conveniently lo-' cated. The flue-damper being open, the products of combustion of solid fuel burning in the fire-box 18 have direct outlet to the back-flue 45, but said damper being closed, said products of combustion travel in said flue-space toward the lower opening therefrom to said back-flue, whereby the oven is'heated for baking In the flue-space under the oven is a baffle-plate 49. (shown in Fig. 3) extending from the pct 33 to the back wall of the stove and to the right of the lower opening from said space to the back-flue, whereby the products of combustion of "solid fuel as aforesaid are deflected around said pot on 2 their way'to outlet.
Because of'the centering of the gasburner 34 under the oven, the pct 33 inclosingsaid burner is nearer the offset 14' of the partition 14 than the opposite end wall of the stove; v and to] prevent congestion of products of combustion in the narrowest portion of the flue-space aforesaid, the stove bottom is there provided with depressions 50 and 51, the area of these depressions being suflicient to equalize the cubic inches of said flue-space allaround said pot.
When only solid fuel is used in the stove, the crank 40 is preferably turned to lower the combined pot-damper 35 and deflectorplate 36, as well as toiadjustithe damper 31 to a position that cuts off the oven-flue 29 from the main flue-space aforesaid, and to indicate the adjustment of said dampers and deflector plate, the index ,word Coal is shown on the then uppermost side of said crank. The word' Gas may be provided on the reverse side of the crank 40 to index a reverse position of the dampers 31, 35 and' the-deflector-plate 36, when the oven is to be heated by means of gas utilized through the burner 34, or when gas is burned to supplement; the heating of said oven byproducts of combustion of solid fuel circulated in the main flue space.
It is not absolutely essential that the outlet ports of the oven-flue be closed when solid fuel alone is burned in the stove, as the draft in the main-flue space will be sufficient to prevent said products of combustion finding their way through said flue into the oven. Neither is it absolutely essential that provision be had for closing the air inlets to the pot 33 when the deflector plate 36 is lowered. The deflector-plate 36 having been l1fted and the gas-burner 34 lighted, the heated air is diverted toward the sides of the oven in which it rises to be drawn out through the upper apertures of the same into the flue 29 and from thence into the main flue space open at the bottom to the uptake back-flue of the stove, said heated air PZISSll'lgfllIlClGI the bottom of said oven where it is again utilized for oven-heating, this being an advantageous economic feature in the use of the stove. The bottom of the pot being closed immediately below the air-inlets to said pct, it insures a steady upward current of air under suction created by the combusticnof gas at the burner 34, whereby downward deflection of heat is avoided, and the area of said inletsis such that sufficient air is admitted to the pot toinsure perfect combustion of the ignited gas.
