AUGUST H. LANDWEI-LR, O1? HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO 'HQLLAND FURNACE COMPANY, OF HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
AUTOMATIC DAMPER.
Application filedMarch 23, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. LAND- WEHR, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic dampers, and more particularly to such dampers for furnaces, stoves, and the like, and its object is to provide a damper in a furnace or stove, with means which require the damper to be opened before the furnace door is opened, and closes the damper after said door is closed, whereby the damper will not be opened during the opening of the door and will not be closed during the closing of the door and thus permit smoke and gases to issue through the door opening during the time of opening or closing the door as is often the case if the damper and door are opened and closed simultaneously in the usual manner.
In the form shown in this application the damper is applied to a hot air furnace and when closed serves to direct the products of combustion in a circuitous path within the radiator of the furnace and permits the same to pass directly to the chimney when the damper is opened, and means whereby when the door of the furnace is opened the damper must first be opened to permit direct draft up the chimney and prevent smoke and gases from escaping during the opening of the furnace door. I have shown the damper in this device connected to a pivoted lever adapted to secure the door of the furnace in closed position and thus preventopening the door without first opening the damper. Obviously the damper might be otherwise connected to the door, whereby opening of the door would automatically open the damper and closing the door would automatically close the same.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of a portion of a furnace with my invention applied thereto, and parts broken away to show the construction and arrangement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged de- Specification of Letters Patent.

tail in elevation, of a portion of the device; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in detail through the axis of the radiator and dome.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents the combustion chamber of an ordinary hot air furnace; 2 the central radiating dome communicating with the chamber l; 3 the radiating ring-shaped chamber surrounding the dome 2 and communieating therewith; by means of a passage 4:.
5 is the smoke pipe communicating with the radiator near the passage at. These parts are of the usual construction.
6 is a damper located in the radiator 3 and extending between the passage a and the entrance to the smoke pipe. When this damper is closed the smoke is prevented from passing directly to the smoke pipe and caused to traverse the circuit of the chamber in the radiator to reach the smoke pipe. When the damper is open the smoke is free to pass from the passage 4 directly to the smoke pipe, and thus this free passage and the draft of the chimney will prevent any gas from escaping from the opening in the front of the furnace closed by the door 9. This door and its casing are of the usual construction and in addition thereto I provide a pivoted lever 11, which, when in horizontal position, engages the latch 10 of the door and holds the door securely in closed position. Attached to the outer end of this lever 11 is a chain 12 which extends upward and thence horizontally over pulleys 13 to above a lever S mounted on a rock shaft 7 and thence downward and attached to the movable end of said lever 8. On this rock shaft 7 is mounted a damper 6 located between the passage f and the smoke pipe 5. WVhen this damper is turned vertical it closes the direct passage to the smoke pipe, and when turned horizontal permits free passage of the smoke directly from the passage 4: to the smoke pipe. The chain 12 is of such length that when the lever 11 is engaged with the latch 10 the lever 8 is raised to a position which turns the damper vertical, and thus causes the smoke to pass around the entire circuit of the radiator 3, and when the lever 11 is turned upward, the lever 8 drops by gravity and turns the damper 6 horizontal. Thus whenever the lever 11 is raised to release the door the damper is automatically opened,
and Whenever the door 9 is secured in closed position the damper is also automatically closed.
lVhat I claim is In a furnace having a front door and a radiating chamber With a smoke pipe extending horizontally therefrom, a rotary shaft mounted horizontally Within the smoke pipe and having one end extending into the radiating chamber, a valve mounted on the shaft Within the radiating chamber, an operating lever mounted on the opposite end of the shaft and extending through the smoke pipe to the exterior thereof, a latch lever pivoted to the furnace and means for connecting said operating lever With the latch lever, whereby said latch lever and valve can be operated in unison.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
