To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB ORMEROD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York,and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Preventers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in smoke consumers or preventers, and has for its object to provide a device more reliable and effective than any heretofore manufactured. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in'which- Figure 1 isageneral front view of the device attached to the front wall of a boiler. Fig. 2 is a side view shown partly in section. Fig. 3' is a sectional view of fire-door and showing attachments. Fig. 4 is a view of the hot-air box. Fig. 5 is a view of actuating-rod; and Fig. 6 is a view of the same rod, showing its two parts disconnected.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the drawings.
A represents a dash-pot mounted upon the rod a, which is secured to the front wall of the boiler B by means of' the extending arm a. The steam-pipe C is provided with a valve 0, which is also fastened to the front wall of the boiler and is provided With'steamjets D, projecting into the fire-box E. The steam-valve c is connected by means of the arm 0 to the piston-rod a of the dash-pot A.
Extending horizontally along the front of the boiler and mounted in the bearings f is a rock-shaft F. Mounted upon this rod F at g is a depending arm G. Connected to this depending arm is a rod H, which also connects at its upper end to the arm 0.
Fastened to the horizontal rock-shaft F at i is a pivotal arm I, which has fastened to its end by a hinged joint the rod 2". This said rod 4; connects to the door K by means of the double hinged joint at I. These hingejoints are of the construction hereinafter particularly described with reference to Figs. 5
and 6. A verticallyrevolving door L is mounted in the casing L upon the door K. Projecting from the door L is an arm Z, which is attached to the lower end of a lever M by means of the rod m. The said lever M is pivotally mounted upon an arm m, extending from the door K. The upper end of the lever M engages against a pin n, mounted upon the arm N, securely fastened to the horizontol rod F. The door L is formed with a ridge Z, which is adapted to act as a counterbalance. Fastened on the inside of thedoor K is the hot-air box 0, provided with openings 0 along its lowerend. The partition 0, forming part of the door K and separating the hotair compartment 0 from the compartment 0 formed by the casing L, is provided with the openings 0 to allow the air to enter the hotair compartment 0 Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, F represents the horizontal rock-shaft fastened to the front of the boiler B. Fixed in said shaft so as to r0- tate with the same about the axis thereof is a pin or rod member i, on which is rotatably mounted the sleeve-arm I, which terminates at its lower end in a lug pivoted on an axispin in the upper end of the rod 1" at right angles to said sleeve-arm I, so as to thereby form a gimbal-joint between the rod and rockshaft. The rod qlis composed of two sections, the upper portion 1 being tubular in form and adapted to allow the lower portion 1 to move in it. The lower end I is connected to the door K by means of agimbal-joint I, similar to the one above described connecting the rod and rock-shaft. These gimbal-joints permit the telescopic rod 2', which is connected with the upper part and rear end of the door, so as to be out of the way when thedoor 1s opened, to swing outwardly and laterally from the furnace with the door on the circular movement of the latter in opening.
The operation of my device is as follows: The opening of the door Kfor the purpose of coalingactuates the rod 71 and forces up the pivotal arm 1, thereby turning the horlzontal shaft F. The turning of the shaftF causes the rod H to be forced upward, thereby drawing up the piston in the dash-pot and opening the steam-valve c, as indicated in Fig. 2,
which shows the door closed after coaling operation is completed. The arm N moves outward by the turning of the rod F and the pin n. The steam ejected from the jet D upon the fire increases the combustion, which consumes the smoke while coal is being put on. WVhen the door is closed, the air is heated before it enters the fire-chamber, which further increases the combustion and more effectively consumes the smoke. On the closing of main door K it will swing to without actuating the rock-shaft, because the resistance of the dashpot will overcome the friction between the connecting parts of the door and rock-shaft and cause the telescopic rod and gimbal-joint connection to yield and enable the parts to move independently. In this return movement of door K the lever M of air-draft door L will strike against the contact-arm n,which has been rocked into contact position, and the door L will be moved and held open to permit air to continue to enter the furnace for a short time after the main door is closed. The rock-shaft F, lever H, and valve-arm 0 will then gradually return to their original positions, being retarded by the action of the dash-pot. By the return of these parts the steam-valve will be closed and the arm n rocked away from lever M to permit the closing of the air-draft door L.
To regulate the time of action, I provide a check-valve a which is attached to the dashpot and affords means for controlling the action of the dash-pot, so that the steam is not cut off or the door L closed entirely until the smoke has all been consumed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a furnace, a door therefor, a steaminjector, a valve for said injector, an arm secured to said valve to open and close the same, an actuating rock-shaft, a rod pivoted to said valve-arm and to said rock-shaft, a member fixed in said rock-shaft, a telescopic rod hinged to said door and to said rock-shaft member by an outwardly and laterally yielding connection at each end of said rod, whereby in the opening of the door, the rock-shaft member will be rotated about the axis of the shaft to rock said shaft and open the valve, and in the closing of the door the same will be permitted to swing back without operating said rock-shaft and valve, substantially as described.
2. In a furnace, in combination with a steam-injector, and a valve therefor, a door for said furnace, an air-draft door in the furnace-door, an actuating rock-shaft for said valve and air-draft door, a telescopic rod, a hinged connection between said furnace-door and rod and rock-shaft and rod, for rocking said shaft by the opening of the door and permitting the door to be closed without rocking the shaft, a lever connecting said rock-shaft and valve, a lever on said air-draft door, an arm fixed to said rock-shaft with which said lever contacts when the main door is closed to thereby open said air-draft door, substantially as described.
3. In a furnace, in combination with a main door, a draft-door in said main door, a steaminjector and valve therefor,an actuating rockshaft, a telescopic rod pivoted to said door by a circularly-yielding connection and similarly connected to an arm of said rock-shaft for rocking said shaft, a lever pivoted at one end to said rock-shaft, a valve-arm to which the other end of said lever is pivoted, a dashpot piston pivoted to the end of said valvearm, a lever pivoted to said draft-door, and a contact-arm fixed on said rock-shaft in the line of travel of the draft-door lever, said lever adapted to contact with the contact-arm on the return of the main door to thereby open the draft-door, substantially as described.
4. In a furnace, a main door therefor, in combination with a draft-door and means to operate the latter, a rock-shaft, an extensible rod connecting said main door and rock-shaft, a gimbal-joint at each end of said rod for said connection consisting of a sleeve surrounding a pin on one part and having a lug pivoted to the other part at right angles to said sleeve, a lever pivoted to said rock-shaft, a steaminjector and valve therefor, a valve-arm, said lever pivoted to said valve-arm, substantially as described.
