SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,353, dated April 18, 1899.

CHURCH,acitizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of IVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain newanduseful Improvements in Smoke Consumers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin My invention relates to that class of smokeconsumers adapted to be applied to furnaces and comprising devices for increasing the draft whenever fresh fuel is introduced and means for restoring the normal condition of draft after the lapse of an interval of time.
It is the object of my invention to obtaina simple construction of mechanism for accomplishin the object above stated and one which is adapted during its interval of operation to gradually cut off the draft, so as to furnish at each instant only the draft required to prevent the formation of smoke, and thereby preventing the wasting of fuel.
The invention is embodied in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a diagram front elevation of a furnace to which my device is applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the regulating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a section through the steam-controlling valve and its operating mechanism, and Fig. 4 is a section through the steam-nozzle.
A is the furnace of a steam-generator.
B are the doors.
C is a steam-pipe leading to a blast-nozzle D which projects into the furnace, and E is a valve controlling the passage of steam through the pipe 0. F is a lever connected to the stem 1) and fulcrumed to the pivotal link Gr, secured to a lug or arm II on the casing.
I is a rod slidingly secured in bearings J. K is a connecting-rod pivoted at one end to one end of this rod and at its other end connected to the pivotal link L, which in turn is connected to the lever F.

nected by the links N to the rod I, said links being preferably bifurcated at one end to embrace the rod I, to which they are pivoted, and having slotted bearings at their opposite ends engaging with pins 2' on the cranks, the arrangement being such that the opening of either of the doors will move the rod in one direction without interference from the other door, while the movement of the rod in the opposite direction will close both doors if they are open.
O is a weight for moving the rod 1 to close the doors. 0 is a chain from which this weight is suspended, which passes over the sprocket P and is connected at its opposite end to the rod I, preferably through the medium of the bell-crank lever Q, one end of which is attached to the chain and the other end to the connecting-rod K.
P is a train of gearing connected to the sprocket P through the medium of the clutch S and provided with asuitable escapement or governing lever T.
The blast-nozzle D is preferably constructed as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, in which j is a pipe connected to and depending from the furnace A outside of the boiler-front. k is a horizontal pipe connected to the pipe j and passing through the front. Z is a hollow hood or deflector connected to the pipe 1;. m
is the steam-pipe connected to the pipe 0 and passing centrally through the pipe it, being adapted to direct a jet of steam against the deflector Z, all so arranged that the part of the nozzle and the deflector exposed to the heat is completely surrounded by a waterjacket which communicates with the boiler.

taking a definite interval of time to complete its movement. D u ring this interval the doors and the valve will be correspondingly gradually moved from their open position to the position where they are completely closed. Thus the draft is strongest at first when it is most needed and gradually dies out. The object of employing a balanced valve is to permit of this gradual closing without interfering with the movement of the time mechanism, which otherwise would be caused by the pres; sure of steam against the valve. Should the fireman desire to open the furnace-door for any other purpose than to throw in fresh fuel,
he may close the doors again immediately without waiting for the time-motor to act by reason of the lost-motion connection between the rod I and cranks M, formed by the slotted links N. He may also immediately close the valve E to turn off the steam by sliding the rod I in its bearings, the flexible chain permitting of this movement independent of the motor and the balanced valve offering no resistance. If the air admitted when the door is fully opened is more than necessary toinsu re perfect combustion, the fireman may partially close it after the introduction of the fuel, in which position it will remain until the movement of the motor takes up the lost motion in the link N, after which the door will be closed. Thus the draft may be regulated to suit the requirements of the furnace or the particular fuel employed.
hat I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with a furnace a door for the furnace having a blast-jet and a balanced valve controlling the same, of a rod slidingly secured in bearings, connections between said rod and the furnace-door and said balanced valve respectively, whereby the opening of said door will move said rod and open said valve correspondingly, a weight for closing said valve and door, having a flexible connection attached to said rod, a wheel over which said connection passes, time mechanism to which said wheel is connected for retarding the closing of said valve and door and an intermediate clutch adapted to permit the free movement of said wheel when the door and valve are opened.
2. In a smoke-consumer, a blast-nozzle comprising a water-tube projecting into said furnace, a hollow hood or deflector connected with said tube and a steam-jet pipe passing through said tube and directed against said hood or deflector.
3. The combination with a furnace, two oppositely-hinged doors therefor, a blast-jet, a valve controlling said jet, connections between said doors and said valve adapted to open the latter on the opening of either door, a time-motor for gradually closing the valve and the open door, said connection between the valve and doors being such that the same can be operated manually to close the open door and valve independently of said motor, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a furnace,a hinged door therefor, a blast-j et, and a balanced valve controlling the same, of a rod slidingly mounted in bearings, a crank connected to said door, a connection between said crank and rod adapted, upon the opening of said door, to slide said rod and adapted to permit the closing of said door without affecting the rod, a connection between said rod and said valve, and a time-motor and a connection between said motor and rod adapted to move the latter to close said door and valve, said connection permitting the closing of the valve independently of the operation of the motor, substantially as described.
