SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,728, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed April 22, 1904. Serial No- 204,308.
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE CRAMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Smoke-Consumers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to smoke-preventers for furnaces. The special object of my improvement is to simplify, cheapen, and improve the construction of the apparatus. I attain this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a. boiler and furnace-front having attached thereto an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the principal operating parts. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the cataract apparatus. Fig. lis a front elevation of a lever-arm E.

E is a horizontal shaft adapted to turn in bearings e, secured to the furnace-front A and extending across the same just above the fire-doors C C.
S is an adjustable arm on the shaft E, adapted to limit the rotation of said shaft by striking against the furnace-front.
F is a cylinder for containing oil or other proper fluid. In this cylinder is a piston F provided with a valve F* opening downward.
F is a spring-pressing the valve F toward the piston F.
f 2 is a nut fixed uponthe piston-rod H below the valve to limit the downward motion of said valve and to hold the spring F There are apertures through the piston which are closed by the valve F when it is against the piston, but are open to allow the passage of fluid when the valve is awayfrom the piston.
F is a by-pass the passage through which may be regulated by a needle-valve f. The tube F communicates with the cylinder F at the ends of said cylinder.
h is a crank-arm upon the shaft E, and H is a connecting-rod joining the free end of the crank-arm h with the piston-rod H.
G is a steam-pipe provided with pipes G G, extending from the pipe G through apertures in the furnace-front.
G is a valve which is adapted to control the admission of steam to thepipe G.
E E are U-shaped malleable iron castings having the ends of their legs secured to the shaft E, so as to form lever-arms with the curved part joining their legs farthest from the shaft E. The lever-arms E are centrally above the pintles of the doors C and extend above and in front of said doors, so as to be acted upon as a cam-surface by said doors in opening.
E is a connecting-rod or chain connecting the doors D with a lug extending downward from the cross-piece e of the lever-arm E.
E is a connecting-rod connecting a lug on a lever-arm E with the stem of the valve G A notch M is formed in the lever-arms E, gradually sloping from the center toward one side and ending abruptly. This notch acts to yieldingly hold the door in its open position.
The operation of the above-described device is as follows: WVhen one of the fire-doors G is opened, it strikes against one of the leverarms E and slides along the same, rotating the shaft E through said lever-arm by raising the lever-arm upward. The upward motion of the lever-arm E raises the door D and at the same'time lifts the valve-stem of the valve G admitting steam to the pipe G. The rotation of the shaft E also raises the piston F the fluid which is in the cylinder Fpassing freely through the apertures in said piston and also through the by-pass F. When the door D is closed, the shaft E is held to its rotated position by the resistance of the fluid in the cylinder F, which passes through the bypass F, the apertures in which are regulated to provide for the proper speed of movement of said piston. As the door D and lever-arm E fall by gravity, causing the shaft E to slowly rotate, the valve G is again closed, and when the door D has reached its lowest position the aperture through the fire-door C is closed thereby.
It will be observed that the lever-arms E not only form arms for the operation of the various parts, but also. form cams which are contacted by the [ire-door C to rotate the shaft E. It will be observed that the cataract-gear F F and the valve are directly connected to the shafts by the simplest mechanism and that the weightof the lever-arms, attached parts, and the doors or a door D serve as a weight to return the shaft E and the various operative parts of the apparatus to their first positions. Thus the simplest and cheapest form of apparatus is secured and one that is direct and certain in its operation.
WVhat I claim is-- 1. The combination of a fire-door, a shaft horizontally journaled thereabovc, a U-shaped lever-arm having its terminals attached to said shaft and depending therefrom in front of said fire-door so as to be contacted and rocked thereby, an auxiliary door hinged to said fire-door and covering an opening therein, a link connecting said lever-arm with said lastmentioned door and adapmd to actuate the same when said lever-arm is contacted and lifted by said fire-door, a steam-pipe adjacent to said shaft, a valve controlling the entrance of steam thereinto and a lever connection between said U-shaped lever-arm and said valve, and adapted to regulate the flow therethrough by the movement thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a fire-door, a shaft pivoted above said fire-door, an arm on said shaft extending above and in front of said firedoor and forming a cam-surface adapted to be contracted and acted upon as a cam-surface by said fire-door, said arm having a notch or bend adapted to engage said fire-door, an opening in said fire-door, a second door hinged thereto and adapted to close said opening, means for connecting said second door with said arm, a steam-pipe provided with a valve, and means for connecting said arm with said valve.
3. The combination of a fire-door, a shaft rotatably journaled thereabove, a lever-arm extending from said shaft and structurally integral therewith, a U-shaped lever-arm depending from said shaftin front of said door, and affording a cam-surface adapted to be acted upon thereby, an opening in said firedoor, a second door hinged to said fire-door and adapted to close said opening, a link connecting said second door with said lever-arm, a steam-pipe provided with a plurality of jets, a valve therein, a connecting-rod joining said valve with said lever-arm, a second lever-arm upon said shaft, a cylinder and a piston linked thereto, and adapted to retard the movement of said shaft and the mechanism connected therewith while returning to its normal position, substantially as described.
4. In a furnace, the combination of a fire door 0, provided with an opening therethrough, a door D hinged thereupon, and adapted to close said opening, a shaft E extending above the door G and adapted to rotate in a plane at right angles to that of the door (3, a U-shaped lever-arm E, depending in front of said door C and structurally integral with said shaft having a notch M, a steam-pipe G, a valve G controlling the flow through said pipe, a connecting-rod joining the lever-arm E with the valve G and a connecting-rod joining the lever-arm E, with the door D and adapted to actuate the same by movements of the shaft E, a cataract-gear, and means for connecting said shaft E therewith, substantially as described.
5. In a furnace, the combination of a liredoor G, provided with an opening therethrough, a door D, pivoted upon the door (J, and adapted to close said opening, a shaft E extending above the door G, and pivoted to turn in a plane at right angles to the plane in which thedoorGturns, a lever-arm E, shaped to form a cam extending over and in front of the door C, and provided with a notch M, and adapted to be actuated by the engagement thereagainst of said door 0, a steam-pipe (I, provided with a valve G a connecting-rod joining the lever-arm E with the valve G and a connecting-rod joining the lever-arm E with the door D, a cataract-gear and means for connecting said shaft with said cataractgear, and an adjustable arm S on said shaft.
