Description

B. s'; S AYRE;
Bale-Tie Fastener.
10.133303, I Patented Dec. 10,1872.
ai itgsszaz v QJmM A M. PHOTO-LIYHOGHAPHIU ca. wr/ospowzls FRUDESS.)
UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. SAYBE, OF STILESBOROUGH, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE TlE FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,803, dated December 10, 1872.
' ton and similar material; and it consists in a lever with a slotted swinging plate attached thereto, and in a detached slotted hook-plate constructed and applied as hereinafter de-, scribed.
'Inthe accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of the lever and swinging bar,
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is a side view of the slotted hook; Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same; and Fig.5 represents the tie fastener as when in use or as applied to abale of cotton.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the lever, composed of wood B and I iron plates 0 0, connected by rivets or bolts D, as seen in the drawing. E is a forked swinging plate, of metal, with a slot, F, near its outer end, the forks being attached to the plates 0 O, as seen at G G. H is the hookplate, with a slot, I, near its broad end and a hook, J at its other end. The parts described are made of a size and strength suitable for the purpose for which they are intended. The manner of applying vthem is shown in Fig. 5. K represents a bale of cotton. L is the band around the bale. M represents the buckle or tie.
The slots F in the forked plate E and the slot I in the hook-plate H are designed to just slip onto the band when those plates are at about a right angle with the band, one on each end of the band, as represented. When thus attached to the band the lever A is raised or turned toward the bale until the hookJ of the plate H will enter the hole N in the lever. The plate and lever are seen in this position, or connected, in' dotted lines. A hold is thus obtained upon each end of the band, as both of the slots bite the band when the plates are turned from a right angle with the halo. The lever is now brought down to the position seen in dotted lines at 0. This draws the two ends of the band toward each other, so that the end P of the band can be fastened to the buckle, the other end of the band being attached to the buckle before the band is put round the bale.
This fastening of the band is but the work of a few seconds of time, requiring but slight exertion much valuable time and hard labor are consequently saved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- l The lever A, with the slotted swinging plate E attached thereto, and the slotted hook-plate H, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes described. 1
ROBERT STOKES SAYBE.
