= INVENTORY ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. MURPHY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR BALING COTTON.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent 0. 170,446, dated November 30, 1875; application filed October 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,-THoMAs HAMILLEO MURPHY, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented Improvements in Devices for Baling Cotton.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new, and are desired to be secured by Letters Patentof the United States.
My invention relates to that class of metal bands or hoops designed for binding bales of cotton and other substances; and the nature thereof consists in the means employed for tightening the hoops, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cotton-bale having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 illustrates the ends of the hoop fastened about the bale.
In the drawings, A designates the band, out of any required length, and having oblong or oval holes perforated at convenient intervals, to adapt the said bands to bales of different sizes. The opposite end of the band is provided with a revolving key or button, the shank of which is secured by riveting 0r otherwise, in a manner to admit of its turning in its socket Without becoming detached from the band. The head of the catch is of a form corresponding with that of said holes or slots in the opposite end of the band, though somewhat smaller, to admit the ready passage of said catch or button through said holes. The said head of the catch or button only projects on one side of the said shank, and the latter is of suflicient length to allow said head to be easily turned when passed through the said holes. The said button is provided with a beveled or obtuse-angled heel, and is turned with facility by a wrench inserted between the bale and the band in such a manner as to grasp the said button.
When the button 0 is turned in such a manner as to occupy a position opposite the hole B, the pressure upon the band causes the ends of the same, to automatically disengage themselves from each other.
taining the slots B till the said catch or button comes directly over the slots or holes. The end of the band is forced down, the catch or button passing through the hole. The projecting portion of the head or button is then turned at-an angle of about eighty degrees with the direction of the band, thereby looking the ends of the hoop together, and confining the same securely around the bale.
Having thus generally described a bale-tie to which my invention is applied, I deem it proper to state that, so far as thus described, it contains no novel and patentablc features.
O designates a lever, one end of which is square, and the other end of which is pointed. Near the square end are cut the transverse slots 1) b, and on the side of the lever opposite to the slots b b, and close to/the square end, is cut the slot at.
When it is desired to tighten the band the square end of the lever is passed through one of the apertures D in the outer end of the same. The slot dis made to engage with or catch into one of the holes B upon the inner end, and one of the fulcrum-slots b made to engage with or catch into one of the fulcrumholes D. The outer arm of the lever is then raised until the band is sufficiently tightened. The lever is then reversed, the pointed end passed through the apertures, and the button secured in position. I
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The mode of tightening bands on bales by means of slots on each end of the band, and a lever notched on opposite sides, inserted with its slots on said band, and constructed in the manner described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this lfith'day of October, 1875.
THOMAS H. MURPHY. Witnesses:
