Application med December 18, 1912.
'b ,uff/Z :Pfl-om t may conc/cm lie it known that we, Louis H. Ensi-innn his.; Herminia, citizens of the United at Hudson, in the county oi l State orn N ew York, have inspeoiiication. i invention relates to improvements in bed springs.
in important object oi the invention is to provide a bed spring which is readily demountable and assembled.
ln the manufacture of bed springs they are in the main so constructed that they may not be readily demounted for the purpose voit compact arrangement for shipment. lNe
iave provided an extensible 'trame having the usual woven wire spring the parts of which when in the assembled position are held in such assembled position by the action of the springs.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the course oi the following description.
in the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose oi illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of our invention and wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of bed spring embodying our invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary end elevation oi the spring,
Fig. l is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the spring eemounted and arranged for shipment, the woven wire sprin` being omitted :tor the purpose of clarity.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numerals 10 and 11 indicate angle iron end frames. Secured to the an gle iron end frame 1() at each end thereof by means oi rivets 12 is a bracket 13. This bracket is provided with horizontal tubular member 14: oi" considerable length. The
i horizontal tubular member has one end open as at 15 and a reduced opening formed in the opposite end as at 16. Secured to each end of the end member 11 by means oi rivets 17 is a bracket 18 provided with a short horizontally extending tubular member 19 having its inner end open as at 20.
Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Serial No. 345,906.
` rhe usual woven wire spring 27 is provided having at each end coiled springs 28 which engage the woven wire structure 27 with one end and the end members 10 and 11 with the other, the members 10 and 11 being provided with spaced openings 29 for this purpose. I
1n assembling the apparatus the side bars 21 are slipped into the tubular members 19 oi' the end member 11 and the adjusting member 23 is screwed into the side members far as possible. rEhe end member 10 is then placed in position, the tubular sockets 1d receiving the ends of the side members 21 in which the operating members 23 are mounted. The ends 25 of the operating members project through the openings 16. The spring is then placed in position and the operating members rotated until the sufficient tension is placed upon the spring 27. ift will be obvious that this tension will hold the end members 10 and 11 upon the side members 21.
When it is desired to ship or store the springs the operating members 23 are rotated to release the tension upon the spring and the spring is unhooked from one of the end members 10 or 11. The side members 22 are then removed and placed trans versely of the tubular members 14 and raising thereon as shown in' Fig. 5. The end member 11 is then inverted as shown in this ligure and placed in position and the spring 2T wound about the end members and hookedupon itself. It will be obvious that the above described arrangement gives a. very compact article for shipment or storage.
As many changes are possible` in the shape, size and arrangement of the various parts herein shown and described We do not limit ourselves to the particular arrangement herein set forth, but may make any such changes Without departing from lthe spirit of the invention7 0r the scope of the subjoined Claim. f
VVhat-We Claim is:
In a bed spring, a pair of tubular side members provided in one end with internal screw threads, end members provided at each side thereof with tubular members slidably receiving the ends of said side members, a spring holding said end members in assembledposition upon said side mem? bers, and means engaging in the internal 15 threads of said side members and abutting one of said end members Jfor adjusting the tension of said spring, the tubular members being oi greater length than those of the other end member.
ln testimony whereof We aHX our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
