UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.`

CONFECTION-BOX.
Application 1ed July 7, 1919.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WV. VAGH- TEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Confection-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes of the kind in which candy and other confections are packed.
One object of my invention is to provide a novel box for candy and other confections that presents a neat and ornamental appearance and which can be sealed or secured by a ribbon or strip of material that extends around the sides and ends of the box instead of over the top of the box, as is now the usual custom.
Another object is to provide a candy box equipped with individual compartments or containers that are adapted to be withdrawn from the outer shell of the box and handed to the persons to whom the candy is being served.
Another object is to provide a multiple compartment candy box in which the closure for the box consists of one of the vertical panels of the outer shell which is so arranged that it can be used as a shelf or supporting device for the individual compartments or containers when said compartments are partly withdrawn from the shell. Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective View of a confection box constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said box, showing the closure for the shell open and one of the individual compartments partly withdrawn from the shell; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of a box constructed in accordance with my invention and provided with a padded top and a padded bottom.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A and B designate the top and bottom of the box, respectively, which are rigidly connected to two vertical panels l that form the end walls of the box and to a vertical panel that forms the rear wall of the box, said vertical panels coperating with the top and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Serial No. 308,973.
bottom of the box to form a rigid shell of oblong shape which is open at its front side.
The box is provided with two or more compartments or containers C that are slidingly mounted in the outer shell in such a manner that they can be inserted and withdrawn through the opening at the front side of said shell. The closure for the opening in the shell through which the individual containers C are inserted and withdrawn is formed by a movable panel 2 that constitutes the front vertical wall of the shell. Said closure 2 can be connected to the shell in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention, but I prefer to hinge the lower edge of the panel 2 to the bottom B of the box so that said panel can be swung downwardly into horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 3 so as to serve as a supporting device or shelf for the confection holders C when said holders are partly withdrawn from the shell, each of said confection holders being provided at its front end with a loop or finger piece 3 so as to facilitate the withdrawal of same from the outer shell of the box.
In packing the box the compartments C are first filled with candy or the goods to be packed in the box and are then introduced into the outer shell through the opening at the front side of same. The front panel 2 is then swung upwardly into its closed position and secured in any preferred manner. I prefer to secure the closure 2 of the box by means of two wafers or sealing devices 4 that are pasted to the closure 2 and to the end panels l of the shell, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1. Thereafter, a ribbon D or strip of other suitable material is wrapped around the side and end walls of 9 the outer shell so as to securely hold the closure 2 in its closed position, hide the sealing devices 4 from View and give the box an artistic appearance. The ribbon D can be of any preferred width and can be secured by tying the ends of same in a bow 0r in any other preferred manner. To open the box the ribbon D is first removed, the sealing devices i are then broken and the closure 2 is then swung downwardly so as to permit the individual containers C to be withdrawn from the shell.
A box of the construction above described makes a very attractive package for candy and other confections, owing to the fact that the ribbon which extends over the movable Closure of the box does not pass over the top ot the box, and thus mar the appearance of same or hide the printing or ornamentation on the top oi the box. Such a box can be filled Without liability ot soiling.` the outside of the box and the contents of the box can be served easily, owing to the fact that the contents is packed in individual containy ers which are of such size that they can be passed around more conveniently than an ordinary candy box. nd still another desirable feature of such a box is that different kinds of candies can be kept separate by packing); them in the different compartments C of the box.
The particular design of the outer shell of the box is immaterial. so tar as my broad idea is concerned, but l prefer to provide the shell With a top and bottom that .project Whether the closure is formed by one of the side panels or one of the end panels ot the shell. lt is also immaterial how the closure is connected to the shell, for my broad idea consists in a confection box composed of an outer shell provided ivith a fixed top and bottom and a vertical Wall having a movable section that serves as a closure for the box, and a plurality of removable compartments or containers'slidingly mounted in the shell between the top and bottom thereof for holding the goods packed in the box.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A confection box, consistingot' a rigid shell of substantially oblong form provided at one side with a hinged panel that is connected to the bottom of the shell, said bottom having a part that supports said panel and holds it i'nl a substantially horizontal position when said panel is open., individual compartments or containersslidingly mounted in said shell and adapted tobe supported by said panel when they are partly Withdrawn from the shell, anda securing means for said panel composed ot a strip of ribbon or other suitable material that extends over same and around .the side and end Walls of the shell.
