IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,580, dated December 3, 1872.

Beit known that we, THOMAS J. GAFFNEY and ALBERT l?. WILLIAMS, both of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification:

Our invention relates to the class of devices designed to file and preserve irmly together letters and other papers; and consists,f1rst, in connection with the ordinary cover, of a metallic slotted back, which is provided on one side with a detachable iiange or strip armed with needles to penetrate the papers to be filed, and on the other side with aspring-clamp, through which the needles pass, the clamp serving to press the lpapers tightly together; second, in connection with the ordinary outside cover, of a supplemental or additional cover, which is detachably connected to the metallic back of the outside cover and tted with the binding-needles, the latter being perforated near their points for attachment to a permanent binding-strip, this additional cover being designed, with the aid of its needles and binding-strip, to permanently bind the papers therein filed, and leave the outer case, with its metallic back and spring-clamp, in a condition to receive another set of needles and additional cover.

Figure l is a perspective view of a letter ile and binder embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the part of the back containing the springs. Fig.4 is a cross-section of the additional binder-cover and needles when detached from the outer cover and permanently bound by the employment of a binder-strip. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of one of the needles, the spring-clamp, back of the additional binder, and strip for the needles. Fig. 6 is a face view of the binder-strip which fits over the needles.

p General Description. 'A is the outer cover, which may be providedwith a socket for the safe keeping of the binding-strip B. The metallicl back of the cover A is composed of two parts, G D, of sheet metal, the part C containing the springs E E for operating the spring-clamp F and having flanges c c', over which the part D is bent, as shown in Fig. 2, to connect the two parts together, the end ilanges c c also serving, after the part D is bent over, to permit of the lapping over of the material of which cover A is composed for the purpose of connecting the cover and metallic back firmly together. To render the bending of the part D over the flanges c perfectly tight small parts d of the metal are partially cut away and bent rmly inward, as shown in Fig. 1. The part C is also provided with a stiff ange, c, which forms the basis for the fastening of the needles, the latter being attached firmly to a strip, G, which is secured to the iiange c by screws H. Between the strip Gr and the flange c the back of the additional or binding cover I is secured, the cover I being threaded over the needles J before the screws H are put in. shown, through which the needles J pass, and

handles f, by which the operator forces it back to enable the needles to receive a letten, When the clamp is extended Vso as to expose the ends of the needles it is held temporarily by springcatch M. f It is released by the finger to enable the clamp to close up against the papers. The needles J are all perforated near the end for the purpose of enabling the connection to tliefneedles of the binding-strip B, which is perforated laterally for the needles to enter, and also perforated longitudinally to admit the wire N, which firmly connects the strip B to the needles, the wire N passing through th e perforations in theneedles'.
