I HAMMER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 18, 19I 9.
1,335,615. Patented Mar. 30,1920;
lUNllTED 'STATE HARRY E. SMALL, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma1f.30,.1920.
Application filed March 18, 1919. Serial No. 283,312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. SMALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful In'iprovements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in hammers and has particular application to a claw hammer.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a claw hammer which will be constructed in such a manner that when the hammer is used to withdraw nails the wood will be protected against mutilation by the hammer head.
It is also my purpose to provide a hammer which will lJQ-COllSillUCtGCl in such a manner that nails may be pulled by the driving end of the hammer as well as the claw end, thereby enabling a proper purchase to be ob tained when it is desired to pull a nail.
Hth the above recited objects in view and others of a similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of a hammer constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
l? 3 is a sectional view through the hammer head.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a hammer handle while 2 indicates the head of the hammer.
In accordance with my invention, the hammer head 2 is formed, at one end, with a driving surface 3 and its other end curved and bifurcated to form a claw 4-. The head 3, at a point approximately centrally thereof, is formed with a transverse opening 5 and with a collar 6 contiguous to one end of the opening 5 co-ar 'ng therewith to form socket to receive om end of the handle 1. On the outer side of the hammer head, that is, the side of the head opposite from the collar 6, the nose formed by the claw 4: is cut out as at 7, and seated within this cut out portion 7 is a pad 8 formed of leather or other suit able material having the end contiguous to the outer end of the opening 5 formed with lateral wings 9 bent down to engage against the sides of the hammer head. Extending through these wings and the side walls of the opening 5 and inserted into the handle are securing screws 10 which act to hold the wings 9 in proper position and at the same time form a connection between the hammer head and the handle. The remaining end of the pad 8 is secured in the cut out 7 by means of a screw 11 or other suitable fastening device.
The outer portion of the hammer head, contiguous to the impact end of such head is formed with a key hole slot 12 and is cut out, as at 13, contiguous to the edges of the key hole slot so as to provide a claw at this end of the hammer head.
In practice, the hammer head may be used when it is desired to pull the nail and when either the claw or the claw forming the slot 7 2 is employed the pad 8 engages the wood to prevent mutilation thereof under the action of the hammer head.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a construction of hammer head whereby a nail may be pulled from either end of the head according to the circumstances or exigencies of the particular case.
Formed in the head of the hammer is a transverse bore or opening 14 that has one end closed and the other end open adjacent the side of the hammer head. This bore contains a quantity of grease for application to the nails or other elements to be driven.
Iclaim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a claw hammer head having the outer surface of the nose of the claw cut out and a flexible pad in said out out portion and secured therein, wings on said pad at the center of said head bent downwardly against the sides of said head, and means passed through said Wings cooperating with said first named means to hold said pad in the cut out portion of the said head.
2. As an article of manufacture, a claw hammer having its outer surface of the nose of the claw cut away, a substantially T- shaped piece of soft material having the body portion fitted in the cut-away portion of the hammer, while the cross piece of said 'l -shaped material is bent to lie against the opposite sides of the hammer head, and means for securing the material in position upon the head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HARRY E. SMALL.
