To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPHBASILE, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in metal beds and more particularly to improvements in what are commonly called three-piece beds, these comprising a headframe, a foot-frame and a mattress or spring carrying frame intended for detachable connection with the head and foot-frames. My invention has reference more particularly to the corner-fastenings by which the mattress or spring carrying frame may be properly and rigidly secured to the head and footframes, and resides more especially in novel corner-fastening members secured to the side-rails of the spring or mattress carrying frame and which receive the end rails of said frame, and novel locking members connected with the corner-posts of the bedstead and adapted to receive said corner-fastening members of the spring or mattress frame, the whole being so arranged, combined and constructed that a very substantial bedstead frame may be produced.
The invention -will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings, l() designates a portion of the corner-post of a metal bedstead, l11 a portion of one of the side rails thereof, 12 a portion of one of the angle iron end rails of the bedstead,.13 the usual helicals connected with said end rail, and 14 a portion of the mattress or spring supported by said helicals from the end rail l2.
My invention has reference more particularly to means, commonly-called a cornerfastening, for connecting the side-rails 11 and end-rails 12 to the corner-posts of the bedstead.
One member of the corner-fastening is numbered 15, and the details of this member 15 are probably more clearly illustrated in Fig. l. rIhe member 15 is formed from sheet steel in one integral piece folded over upon itself to form a main loop 16, parallel facing flanges 17 and parallel sides 18 whose upper portions are cut away, as `at 19, to form the outwardly projecting tongues 20 and shoulders 21. The flanges 17 are riveted together by rivets 22 and the lower inner. portion of the loop member 16 receives the outer end of the side rail 11, whose extreme 'tween the sides 18 of the corner-fastening end member 15, as clearly represented in Figs. 2 and 4. The corner-fastening member 15 is thus in one integral piece compris ing the flanges 17, sides 18, tongues and flanges 24, 25, this member 15 being in one integral piece and rigidly secured to the side rails 11 of the bedstead.
The corner-post 10 may be of any usual or suitable construction, and at present I illustrate a post 10 which is of metal and rectangular in cross-section. The corner-post 1() is formed with a vertical slot 26, and on the-inner face of said post adjacent to the fastening member 15 l apply ametal plate 2T `having a corresponding slot 28, while upon the outer face of said post 10 l apply ya further plate 29 having a slot 3() matching the slots in the plate 27 and cornerpost 10.
The means for connecting the corner-fasteningmember 15 with the corner-post 1l), comprises, in addition to the flanges 24:, 2,5y of said member 15, the device shown in Fig. 6, which is of sheet steel and embodies aloop member 31 formed by bending the metal of said device upon itself, shoulders 32 above and below said loop member' 21 which engage `the face of the plate 29 appliedto the inner outer face of the post 10, and lateral flanges 33 which receive behind them the flanges formed on the fastening member 15, as shown in Fig.` 2. l preferably curve the metal of the fastening device shown in Fig. 6 inwardly, at opposite sides,

The horizontal loop portion 31 of the fastening device member, shown in Fig. 6, is, as clearly represented, introduced througlifthe slots 2G, 2S, 3() the post 10 and plates 27, 29 the shoulders 32 of said device bringing jup against the plate 29, and the said device shown in Fig. 6 is rigidly fastened to the corner-post l() by means of an interior wedge bar 35 which introduced dewnwardly througgh the interior of the corner-post and between the sides of said loop member. 31 and driven firmly to position so as to draw the slmulders 32 oit' th'e locking device. shown in F ig. In view of the offset formed by the shoulders 21 on the corner-fastening member 15 and the. openingth'ereat and above the same between the sides-of said member 15, I apply a plate 36, shown in Fig. 5, upon the tongues 2O of the member' l5, said plate having an upper portion 37 containing slots 3S to fit upon said tongues 20 and a lower inclined portion 89 to engage the upper edges of said shoulders 21, said plate thus closing the space between the upper portions of the sides of the fastening member 15. The plate 36 is not absolutely essential for the corner fastening, but is a valuable portion thereof in that it serves to exclude dust and tl e like from the space between the upper portions of the sides ofthe member 15.
Upon the tongues l2O or those portions thereof which extend outwardly beyond the plate 36, I apply the end rails 12, said end rails being at their yend portions provided with slots 40 to pass upon the tongues 20 which may thereafter be upset, as shown in Fig. 1, to permanently connect the rails 12 to the corner-fastenings, and Vthereby produce what is in effect a three-piece bed comprising the head and foot frames and the mattress or spring carrying frame eonsist ing `of the side rails 11 and fastening members 15. The end rails 12 are apertured,as
rat 41, to receive the helicals 13 of the mattress or spring 14, as usual. The presence of the end rails 12 on the tongues 20 serve to effectuallysecure the protector plates 36 in permanent and rigid position.
In assembling lthe several "parts ofthe bedstead, after the fastening members shown in Fig. 6 have been secured to the cornerposts and the corner-fastening members 15 have received the Aside-rails 1.1, end rails 12 and mattress or spring, the fastening-members 15 are moved against the corner-post 10 and the flanges 25 of said members 15 are slid downwardly behind the flanges 33 of the locking device, shown in Fig. 6, or to the position shown inv Figs. 1 vand 2, the flanges 21- of the member 15 at that time sliding downwardly against the outer face of the plate 29, "which is a .reinforcing plate, and in the absence of which saidflanges 24: will slide downwardly along -the exposed face of the corner-post 10.
One important feature of the invention is that the flanges 33 of the fastening device shown in Fig. 6 incline downwardlyl and i outwardly so as to afford inclined or wedge surfaces, and that the inner edges of the flanges 25 incline. downwardly and outwardly so as'to afford wedge surfaces, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figrl. Vhen, therefore, the corner-fasteningmember 15 is applied to the corner-post and theflanges are caused to settle down behind the flanges 33, there is a wedging action between the A.fastening member 15 and the locking member shown in Fig. 6 which serves to veryr rigidly connect that member of the bedgtead which includes the side rails and spring' or mattress, with the corner-posts of the head and foot-frames of the bedstead.
The corner-fastening of my invention, as
shown in the drawings, is duplicated at the four corners of the bedstead and therefore it seems te be sufficient to show these devices as applied to one corner of the bedstead. The parte composing the corner-fastening are fev,1 in number and of great efficiency :and durability. With the employment of said corner-fastenings, the member comprising the spring, end members and side rails may be very quickly and conveniently applied to the end frames and when applied the bed trame a whole is very rigid and devoid of rocking or loose movement, the head and foot-frames being held in rigid initieel position with relation to the middle member of the bed consisting of the mattress or airing, sido rails and fastening' members l5.

2. ln combination with a side-rail and a corner-post of a bedsteae, a corner fastening therefor' comprising a sheet metal member embracing the end of the side-rail and having parallel sides .,ecured together along one edge and at their outer edges formed with spaced-apart corresponding` right-angle vertical flanges, the outer of whose members face the corner-post while the other meinbers extend inwardly between said sides, a locking-ni einber having; a loop extended into the corner-posti. shoulders facing the said post and laterally extending flanges to receive behind them the inwardly extending members of said right-angle and means for securing said locking-member to the corner-post, said inwardly extending members being at their free edges inclined downwardly and outwardly and said laterally extending flanges of said lockingme1n ber being inclined downwardly and outwardly so as to establish a wedging-action between these parte.
3. ln combination with a side-rail, a corner-post and an end-rail to receive the spring or mattress member of a bedstead, a corner-fastening therefor comprising a sheet metal-member embracing the end of the side-rail and having parallel sides secured together along one edge and at their outer edges formed with spaced-apart corresponding right-angle vertical flanges, the outer of whose members face the cornergost, while the other members extend inwardly between said sides, and said sides also being cut away above said right-angle flanges to form tongues and shoulders, a locking-member having a loop extended into the corner post, shoulders facing said post and laterally extending flanges to receive behind them the inwardly extending members of said right-angle iianges, means for securing said locking member to the corner-post, and a closing-plate having slots to pass upon said tongues and upper and lower members to close the space between the upper outer portion of said parallel sides, said end-rail being slotted to pass upon said tongues.

In a bedstead frame, in combination, a side rail, a corner-post and an end rail to receive the spring or mattress member, a corner-fastening therefor, comprising a sheet metal member secured to the end of the side-rail and having parallel sides secured together along one edge and at their outer edges formed with spaced-apart corresponding right-angle vertical Hanges, the outer of whose members face the cornerpostn while the other members extend inwardly between said sides, and said sides also being 'cut away above said right-angle anges to form tongues and shoulders, a loeking-1nember having a loopmextended into the corner-post, shoulders facing said post and laterally extending flanges to receive behind them the inwardly extending members of said right-angle flanges, a plate at the inner side' of said post through which said loop extends, a plate at the outer side Yofsaid post. through which said loop extendsand which is engaged by the shoulders of `said looking member, a wedge within saidpost 'entered through said vloop and engaging saidpl'ate 'located at the inner side. of said post, for securing said .locking 15 member to the post, and a closing-plate having slots to pass upon said ,tonguesv and upper and lower members to close thev space between the upper outer vportion of said parallel sides, said end rail being Aslotted 20 to `pass upon said tongues.
