UNITED STATES PATENQFHCE ALBERT E. sUPLEE, 0E sAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
` IMPROVEMENT IN SHANKS FOR TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,498., dated November 26, 1872.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. SUPLEE, of San Francisco, in the county ot'v San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Shanks for Tools 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in the combination ot a tool-shank provided with a screw-thread, and beveled bolster with a handle, having a corresponding socket with beveled recess, and a ferrule, as will be fully described hereinafter.
III the drawing is represented a view, partially in section, of a tool provided with my improved shank and handle.
To enable others to make this improved tool, I will proceed to describe fully its construction.
A represents the handle, constructed preferably of wood or other similarmaterial, which is provided with a suitable socket to receive the threaded shank C of the tool, and also with a beveled recess, E, as shown in the drawing. It is further provided with the usual binding-ferrule to prevent it from splitting. The tool is provided with a shank, C, having a suitable screw-thread, B, and a bolster, D,
the inner edge of which latter is beveled to correspond with the recess E in the handle. The two parts are united together simply by screwing one into the other.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a tool-shank with a screw-thread and bolster, and secure the shank to the handle by screwing them together. Heretofore, however, the part of the bolster that bears upon the end of handle, so far as applicant is aware, has been made iat, as may be seen in the patent to James M. DeWitt, May 4,1869, which is hereby fully disclaimed; but in my invention the part of the bolster which bears upon the end of the handle is made beveled, and in the end of the handle a socket is made to receive the same.
Having thus fully described Iny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The combination of the handle A having the beveled recess E with the shank C having the screw-thread and the beveled bolster D, substantially as shown and described.
In Witness whereofl have hereunto set my hand and seal.
ALBERT II. SUPLEE.

C. W. M. SMITH, PHILIP MAHLER.
