IMPROVEMENT IN HAIR-ROLLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,491, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE SomoNBEcK,
of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain Improved Roll for Hair, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to a roll for the protrusion of and support of the hair upon the heads of women; and consists in the manner of constructing the same, as hereinafter described. v
The drawing is a perspective view of a roll illustrating my invention, a portion of the central part being cut away to exhibita sectional view and to show the axial wire which extend through from end to end.
A is a wire extending axially through the roll from end to end, and having terminal eyes a to receive a cord or pins, by which it is secured to the head of the wearer.
B is an elastic core of short hackled jute, which surrounds the wire and gives support to the outer coat or skin O.v The skin 0 is formed of long fibers of jute, made water-proof and elastic, coiled smoothly around the core so as exactly to resemble hair, and held in position by the addition of some adhesive substance or compound which will not, when dry, interfere with the flexibility of the skin nor become soft and sticky in use. The wire A acts to prevent the elongation of the roll and furnishes points for attachment. The wire, however, is not claimed as new in application to rolls, as it has been used in those already in use. port the skin 0, and the skin 0 serves to retain and protect the core. of the core and skin admits of the roll being distorted by pressure, after which it readily regains its original form. The ends of the core are made conical and the ends of the skin are folded in, as shown at 0', so as to conform to the tapering ends, and the seam secured by stitches, as shown, or held by an adhesive compound, such as shellac dissolved in alcohol or any other suitable substance.
The roll may vary in size or form as required by the style in which the hair is dressed.
I claim as my invention A hair-roll, consisting of the axial wire A provided with eyes at its ends, elastic filling B, and elastic water-proof covering 0 resembling hair, as and for the purpose set forth.
