EDWIN COX, OF WONEWO'C, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters PatentrNo. 133,357, dated November 26,1872.
woe, in the county of Grant, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Object of the Invention.
My invention is a washing-machine to be used by hand, and operated with a crank or by applying power to it. It has a paddlewheel to throw the water onto the clothes, and rubbers to rub the clothes attached to and operated by a crank, or by power on the paddle-wheel shaft, with a heater under the machine to be heated with lamps, gas, or by wood, so as to keep the water hot in which the clothes are washed.
Description of the Drawing forming part of this Specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the machine, and Fig. 2 a sectional View.
l General Description.
A is the box in which the machinery is operated. This box has a metal bottom which the heater comes in contact with. B, the paddle-wheel O, a connecting arm from the washboard to the crank on shaft B; D, the lower wash-board; E, a shaft running from the cross-bar from the pitman or rockin g-shaft F to the rear end ot' the upper wash-board; F, rocking-shaft oscillating on the side of the box A, and to the top of which is attached connecting arm C, and to the lower end wash-board D, so that when the paddle-wheel B revolves the crank will force arm C back and forth, and as it works back and forth wash-board D, at the lower end, is operated in one direction, and the upper wash-board in the other direction. Gr are bolsters in the upper rubber, with pins in them to haul the clothes back and forth as the wash-boardos-v cillates; H, the other bolster or iix'ed rubbers. These bolsters are fixed firm in a frame, while the bolsters G are hung on shafts in the center and roll back and forth as the wash-board oscillates. I, cog-wheel on the outside of the box, and meshing intoy an intermediate wheel, K, which meshes into wheel M on the shaft of wheel B, and a crank, Y, on this wheel I operates the machine; L, keeper to hold the shaft of K in position; M, wheel on shaft of wheel B; N, heater, in which is to be built a fire to heat the water in box A; O,
smoke-pipe from heater N; P, spout from box A to draw off the water, when necessary; Q,
pins in the side of box A to hold the upper wash-board up in position; R, leaf hinged to the top of box A, which, when down, forms a table; S, prop with which to hold the leaf B up; T, wheel, on the other end of shaft, on which to put a belt to drive the machine when moved by power; U, hangers, on which the frame is hung in which the upper wash-board works. These hangers are attached to the frame, and then attached to the sides of box A by pins Q, and the upper wash-board, when it moves toward the wheel B, rises up, and when it goes back it falls down again and presses the clothes, much like hand-washing on a wash-board. V, slides on the side of the wash-board, which .work on studs in the side of the frame in which the board operates; W, door to heater in which to put wood to lire up the machine; X, a rod 'across between levers F; Y, crank with which the machine is oper ated; Z, a button on the under side of leaf B to hold up the swinging leaf, whenever necessary, to hold up the swinging leaf to make a table of box A; a, crank on shaft of wheel B, which operates the wash -boa-rd; b, springhook on operator'E, to secure it to connectingrod X.
Operation.
Put water and soap into box A and fire up heater N, and raise up the back end of the frame, in which the upper wash-board is located, and put in the clothes to be washed; then operate the crank Y, and that will revolve wheel B, and oscillate the 'wash-board back and forth, and wash the clothes.
If the machine is to be operated bypower, put the belt on drum T and set the machine in operation, and the clothes will be speedily washed.
I claim as my invention- 1. Wheel B, in combination with boards G, H, and D, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the paddle-wheel B, washer-board G, H, and D, and heater N, substantially as described.
EDWIN COX.
