IMPROVEMENT m HATCHE TS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,343, dated November- 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. THOMPSON, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hatchets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawing which forms and makes a part of this specification.

Figure l is an elevation of a hatchet containing my improvement, hereinafter described. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through said hatchet; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a hatchet, clearly showing my improved clutch, hereinafter fully described.
The nature of my invention consists in forming, at a proper place in the side of a blade of a hatchet, a slot or clutch, and in cutting away the blade of the hatchet in the immediate vieinity of said slot in such a manner as to allow a more effectual use of the claw, as hereinafter described.
I am aware that claws have been formed in the blades of hatchets heretofore for the purpose of drawing nails, 850.; but my improve ment consists in forming that portion of the blade immediately surrounding said slot or claw, marked A, thinner than the remainder of the blade B, near that point, so as to increase the utility of said claw U, and more readily allow of the drawing of all sizes of nails, and also to allow of the more ready introduction of said claw or clutch C under the heads of nails and tacks that may project but little from the surface of the object in which they are driven.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a hatchet constructed with a countersunk claw or clutch, O, in the blade, substantially as herein shown and described.
