To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CLINT I'I. HULING Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Shape Retainers and Loss Preventing Devices,"of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat shape retainers and gages the wearers head to retain the hat thereon, while the other portion thereof is secured to the sweat band and retains the crown of the hatin its proper shape.

Another object of my invention resides in y the provision of means which may be detached from the'sweat band of a hat and folded into a comparatively small space whereby the device may be readily 'accom- Y lnodated in a wearerspocket.

Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a yieldable element which is stretched across the sweatband of a hat to form a chord, which will snugly engage the forehead of the wearer and thereby aid in retaining a hat upon the wearers head.

A further object of'the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above mentioned character including a yieldable element which may be easily and quickly detached or attached to the hat shape retainer which is secured to the sweat band.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

Each section is provided with a'plurality of openings adjacent their longitudinal edges so that the sections composing the strip 9 may be rigidly secured to the sweat band by sewing the same thereto or in any other suitable manner. section 11, to each end of which is pivoted an end section 12. The lower edge of each end section is provided with a depending leg 13. It is also to be understood that the strip 9 consisting of the three sections may be formed from anysuitable material which will hold its shape and accordingly retain the crown of the proper shape. 7 I

A yieldablee-lement 14: in the form of an elastic strip, has its opposite ends looped as at 15, which loops are adapted to engage with the depending legs 13 of the strip 9. Therefore, it will be clearly evident that when the strip 9 is applied to a sweat band, the yieldable element 14: will be stretched across said sweat band to form a chord.

In practice the strip 9 which is composed hat in its of a plurality of sections hingedly connected together is secured to thefront of the sweat band adjacent the upper edge thereof, and

inasmuch as the sections are pivotally connected together, the strip 9 as a whole will conform to the shape of the hat or sweat band.

Inasmuch as the strip is formed of some substantial material, it will at all times retain the hat in itsproper shape even though the yieldable element 14 is under tension 9 which would tend to draw the legs 13 to gether. The loops 15 of the yieldable element are then placed upon the legs-13 and the element forms a chord. When the wearer places the hat containing the invention upon his head, the yieldable element 14 is moved or stretched toward the strip 9 so that the wearers head may be accommodated within the sweat band. The normal tendency of the element 14 is to recoil to its properpositionto form a chord and through this action will exert a pressure upon the forehead of the wearer and thereby prevent the hat from blowing off of the head. It will be at once recognized that this device could be applied to womens hats and thereinvention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination ofparts, ma-

terials, dimensions, etc, as may prove ex pedient and fall within the scope of the app n ed l im Having thus'fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination with. a hat having a sweat band of a substantially rigid curved strip secured to the upper edge of said band, a depending leg formed upon said strip ad- 'jacent each end thereof, and a yieldable element having its opposite ends secured to said legs adjacent the, lower edge of the sweat band whereby the yielda'ble element is stretched across said strip to form a chord :kflor dretaining said hat upon the wearers 2. The combination with a hat having-asweat band, of a curved strip detachably secured to said sweat band, a, depending leg formed upon the strip adjacent each end thereof. and a 'yieldable element having its opposite ends looped and received upon said legs whereby the element is stretched across the sweat band to form a chord'for the purpose set forth. l

4. A hat attachment comprising a sectional strip of curved plates adapted to be placed against the sweat band of a hat, certain of said plates having projections thereon, and a flexible forehead engaging member carried by said projections and stretched across; onefend of the hat opening.
