UNITED sTA s PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. ADAMS, F INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OI ONE-THIRD '10 0. A. TH OMPSON, OF INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS.
. Be it known that I, JOHN J. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Spring Latches, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a double spring latch and the object is the production of a simple and eflicient latch that can be quickly applied to a door, or the like, or applied to the frame of the door, for holding the door or hinged memberin a secure and tightlyclosed position. v
With this and other objects in view, my
- invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
' In the drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, while Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, with the cover removed.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view of the latch, while Fig. 4 is a transverse, sectional view.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sliding Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the frame of a door or gate and '2 the door or hinged member. Boltcatch 3 is secured u'pon the frame 1, and this bolt catch is provided with a cut-out portion 4 for receiving the inner end 5 of the sliding bolt device hereinafter specifically described.
The casing 7 is secured to the ,door 2 by screws 8, and the casing is provided with a cover 9 which is detachably secured thereon by means of pivoted locking members 10. A pair of bars 11 extends entirely through the ends 7 of the casing 7, these bars being arranged parallel, and slidably mounted upon the bars 11, near the front end of the casing, and adapted to bear against the inner face of'this end, is a plate 12. Mounted upon the bars 11, between plate 12 and the rear end of the casing, are coil springs 13.
The plate 12 s provided with a central,

bifurcated portion straddles the squared portion 15 of the bolt device.
The bolt device 6 comprises a body,16-, an integral grip or knob 17, and ahead 18, the head 18 being integral with the squared portion 15. Upon the upper face of the head 18 is formed a downwardly-extending or curved face or surface 18*, that performs the function of a cam, inasmuch as the farther the point 5- enters under the catch of the catch bolt, the more tightly the door 2 will be closed, by reason of the gradual forcing of the door farther into its closed position by reason of the inclined surface 8 acting as a cam for accomplishing this'desired efiect.
In the. position shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to open the door or gate 2, all the closed position, whereupon the beveled end 18 of head 18 will strike against the--in-, clinedfedge 18 of the catch bolt 3 riding over this inclined edge, permitting the outer end 5 of the head to ride under the catch, and then by reason ofthe inclined surface 18?, a tight closing of the hinged member or door 2 will be caused.
From the foregoing description, it will be understood that I have described the preferred form of my invention, but in the manufacture thereof certain minor changes or alterations may be desired, and, therefore, I reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: i
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a catch, of a casing contiguous thereto, parallel bars extending through the ends of said casing, a plate slidably mounted upon the bars near one end,
said plate being bifurcated at its inner edge fitting the bifurcation of the plate whereby both the plate and the bolt device are prevented from independent sliding movement, and coil springs upon the bars between one end of the casing and the plate, and the head of the bolt device adapted to engage the catch. when in operation.
In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame and a door, of a bolt cat-ch secured to said frame and provided with a catch and a curved receiving socket, a casing dctachably vsecured to said door, said casing'comprising ends and an open body, a detachable cover carried upon the open portion of the body for closing the same, a pair of longitudinally-extending, parallel bars on the casing and extending through its ends, a sliding bolt device between the bars and extending through the ends of the casing, said bolt device including a, body having at one end a knob and at its opposite end an integral reduced, squared portion, a head integral with the outer end of the squared portion, said head provided at its outer end with an inclined or cam surface adapted to engage the catch of the catch bolt, :1 plate slidably mounted upon the bars near one end of the casing, said plate provided with a bifurcated central portion straddling the squared portion of the bolt device, whereby the plate and bolt device simultaneously are operated, and coil springs around the bars and bearing atone end upon an end of the casing and at their other end upon the plate for retaining the bolt device normally in a closed position with the cam face of the head under the catch of the catch bolt, substantially as shown and described.
