Description

0. A. NORTH.
Improvement in Metallic Basket-Handles.
No. 133,168. a Patent ed Nov. 19,1872
AM PHOTO-LIT/IDGHAPHIC mm X (ossonus's FHOCESSJ UNITED STATES IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BASKET-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,168, dated November 19, 1872.
- manufacture-to wit, a metallic basket-handle constructed of a single piece of cast malleable metal, havingsockets forreceiving the baskets rim, formed with the lugs which catch under the edge of the rim and of malleable metal,
so as to allow the lugs to pass the body of the rim, and then be bent to catch overits under side, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a basket-handle which embodies my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
A designates the handle proper, and B a portion of a basket-rim. At each end of the handle I form an open mouthed or bifurcated socket, a, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The metal composing the socket a not only extends down upon each side of the rim B, but also extends inward and catches upon the under edge of the rim, while it is open sufficiently to allow ample room for the basket-splints I). The basket is formed and bound complete before attaching the handles, and should be formed so that the splice of the outer and inner hoops which form the rim shall be on opposite sides.
I design to make the handle of malleable metal, so that the sockets a may be opened at the bottom sufficiently to slip them over the rim at one of the splices, when the sides of the sockets will be compressed to fit the sides of the rim, and also hook under its edge, as shown in Fig. 2. The handle is then firmly secured by rivets c c, which, by clasping each side of the rim, will furnish additional security to the splice. Another handle is then secured inlike manner over the other splice upon the opposite side of the basket.
I claim as my .invention- As a new article of manufacture, a handle for baskets made of malleable metal, having sockets to a with lugs projecting inwardly, all as described, and for the purpose set forth. ORRIN A. NORTH. Witnesses:
