Description

W. G. MOORE.
EAR FOR RAILS. No. 285,298. Patented Sept. 18,1883.
Viz mew 5 0a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. GEORGE MOORE, OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
EAR FOR PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,298, dated September 18, 1883.
" Application filed June 2, 1883. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. GEORGE MooEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ears for Pails and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful, improvements in ears for the attachment of handles to pails, buckets, or cooking-utensils, the object of my invention being to provide to the trade an ear which is complete in itself and provided with means for attaching the same to a vessel; and to this end my invention consists in an car which is formed complete, with attaching means therewith, which can be secured to a vessel by merely upsetting or bending the'parts within suitable perforations formed in the vessel.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure I is a perspective View,
' showing the ear detached. Fig. 2 is a side I lower portion of the ear A is provided with outwardly-projecting lugs a, which are attached to the same, the upper part of the ear being provided with a perforation, I), through which passes the end of the handle.
In Fig. 3 of the annexed drawings I have shown a modification of my invention, in which the body of'theear is of ordinary construction, and is provided with perforations, through which pass rivets a, which are attachedto the ear by means of solder, or are secured thereto when the ear is galvanized, as ears for pails are usually furnished to the trade galvanized.
To attach this improved ear to a pail it is only necessary to make in the bucket or pail openings which will correspond with the lugs a within these openings, after which the inner ends of these lugs, which project through the body of the pail or bucket, may be upset or bent down, thereby securing the ear tothe body.
By means of my improvement I am enabled to furnish to the trade an ear having means for attachment to the bucket provided on the same, thus saving the additional expense of rivets and the annoyance of placing them in position.
I aware that prior to my invention bail-ears have been made of a single, piece of metal, which have been provided with means for attaching the same to a bucket, as prongs, and I lay no claim to such as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of commerce, an ear for bails, provided with means for attaching the bail to the same, and means for attaching the ear to the pail or vessel, which means consists of a rivet secured by solder to the ear, so as to project on the inner side of the same, substantially as shown.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W. GEORGE MOORE.
