GEORGE B. oHAsE, 0E AUsTmBUEe, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASES FOR lNRlTING MATERIALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,142, dated November 19, 1872.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CHASE, of Austinburg, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Oase for Writing Material, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my invention; Fig. 2, an end view, partly in section; and Fig. 3, a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new case or box for the reception of pen, ink, paper, 850.; and consists in providing a groove under the bottom of the narrow box for the insertion, transversely, of the cover, so that the cover will, when the box is opened, aid in supporting the box in an upright position.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents a box made of wood or other material, of suitable size, and preferably of rectangular shape, narrow and long in proportion. 13 is its cover. This cover is made with dovetailed edges, which fit corresponding grooves in the sides of the box, and is slid into and out of place to close or open the box. In one end of thebox is hung a disk, 0, which has portions of its edge cut away, as indicated at a, in Fig. 2. This disk, when turned to enter a notch or groove in the under side of the cover, as in Figs. 1 and 2, looks the cover. A key, D, fitting the prismatic or other shaped end of the disk-arbor b, can be applied from the outside to turn the disk, and in bringing its flattened portion a under the cover to unlock the same and allow it to be drawn open. The disk 0 is concealed within a recess in the end of the box, as shown, and can thus not be tampered with from without. In the lower side of the bottom d of the box is a dovetailed transverse groove, e, large enough to receive the cover B. When the box is opened for use, the cover can be applied into this groove (2, and thereby made to enlarge the bottom of the box laterally, and to furnish a more complete support for the box. The interior of the box is, by one or more partitions f, subdivided into a suitable number of compartments, 9 g, for the reception of letters, paper, envelopes, &c. It also contains a block, h, within which are recesses or sockets for the reception of one or more ink-bottles, i, pens and pencils j, and.
other implements for writers use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The writing-case provided with the transverse groove 0 in the bottom, for the reception of the cover as a supporting-bar, substantially as described.
GEORGE BYRON CHASE.
