UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN BELLAMY, or new YORK, n. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWERS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 133,135, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BELLAMY, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Drawers, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of drawers for mens wear, in which the parts forming the legs are cut by novel patterns, the outlines of which are of such form that with inflexible material the legs may fit the wearer tightly and not draw or bind across the knees, as drawers of inflexible goods now do unless made uncomfortably large.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of drawers constructed according to my improvements; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a diagram of the Outside piece of the leg; Fig. 4 is a diagram of the front inside piece; and Fig. 5 is a diagram of the back inside piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding par-ts.
The outside piece A is intended to contain about half the breadth of cloth contained in the complete leg and one side of the body portion of the drawers, and the pieces are all formed so that the seam B, joining the outside piece A and the front inside piece 0, will be along the front of the leg as near the center as may be, while the seam joining said outside piece with the back inside piece D will be along the center of the back of the leg. This allows of cutting the cloth so as to have the swell required at E in the front to make room for the knee when the wearer sits or otherwise bends the knee; it also allows of cutting the cloth so as to curve inward at F, to conform to the shape of the leg under the knee, and swelling it out again at G to conform to the swell of the calf of the leg. The edge a b d of the front inside piece is constructed in the same form as the front edge a b d of the outside piece with which it joins and forms the front seam B, and the edge e f g is constructed on the same form that the rear edge e f g of the outside piece with which it joins is and forms the back seam. The edges a b and a b are slightly concaved to correspond with the form of the front of the leg from the knee to the ankle. The edge It i of the back inside piece D is joined to the edge h i of the front inside piece 0. From 5 to j the two inside back pieces join together, and from t to j the front inside pieces meet at J, Fig. 1. Thus I produce curves in the leg of the drawers, both front and back, corresponding to the curves of the leg when bent at the kneejoint, which said curves may be varied as to their radiuses, as may be preferred in practice but the most desirable curves will be such a mean between a straight line and a right angle as will cause the least strain across the knees when sitting, with the least folding or pricking at the knees when standing, which said curves will be found to be about such as represented in the drawing, which I have demonstrated by practical experiment.
The slight curve a a b b at the front below the knee, also the swell G at the rear, are not essential to the main object, which is to prevent the strain of the cloth across the knees; but for making tight fits I prefer to shape them so.
It will be seen that by cutting the parts so as to be joined at the front and back of the leg the cloth can be shaped to afford the excess needed in front of the knee, and to remove the superfluous parts behind by shaping the edges on the requisite curves, which cannot be done in any manner whatever with inflexible woven cloth when the seams are formed at the sides in the usual way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In drawers of woven goods, the outside piece A, front inside piece 0, and back inside piece D, constructed substantially in the forms represented in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, and joined to gether, as specified.
JOHN BELLAMY. Witnesses:
T. B. Mosnnn, O. SEDGWIOK.
