B. JENKINS.
PLUMBING DEVICE.

@Wto/rm mJj BENJAMIN JENKINS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PLUMBING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed December 15, 1919. Serial No. 345,100.
To all fav/wm t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plumbing Devices, of which the followinoa is a specification.
he device which is the subject matter of the present application for patent has been designed to facilitate the flushing out and removal of obstructions from the overflow of lavatory bowls, bath tubs and similar fixtures, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and highly eficent device of this kind which also serves as the strainer of the bowl outlet when it is not used for the flushing operation.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel vcombination' and arrangement of parts t0 be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device i showing its application;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a bowl, basin or similar lavatory appliance having a bottom outlet opening in which is tted the strainer 6 which is the subject matter of the present application for patent. The bowl also has an overflow opening 7 leading to an overflow channel 8, which latter communicates with the outlet. The bowl is of conventional construction and hence a detailed description thereof is not necessary. It will also be understood that the invention is not lmited to lavatory bowls, but it may, with equal facility, be applied to bath tubs.
The strainer 6 consists of a body having a main central water passageway 9 and a series of other water passageways 1U around the same. These passageways extend through the strainer from one end to the other to permit the escape of water from the bowl into the waste pipe connected to the latter.
The strainer 6 also has a series of water ports 11 leading radially from the passageway 9 and opening through the side of the strainer in the plane of the overiow channel 8 so as to permit the latter to discharge into the passageway 9 and thus provide for the escape of the overflow water.
For flushing out and removingobstructions from the overflow channel 8, there 1s inserted into the main water passageway 9 of the strainer G, a hollow plug 12 closed at its lower end and having at its upper end a nipple 13 for attachment of one end of a ilexible hose 1i having its other end connected to the spigot 15 from which the water supply lto the bowl is obtained. The plug also has side outlet ports 16 and adapted to register with the lateral ports 11. It will therefore be seen that when the plug 12 is in place and the water is turned on, there is a flow from the interior of the plug 12 through the ports 16 and 11 into the channel 8. The water escapes through the opening 7 into the bowl 5, from which latter it escapes through the passageways 10 of the strainer. In this manner a continuous circulation of water through the overiow may be maintained, with the result that all obstructions are dislodged and discharged into the bowl, from which latter they escape through the outlet thereof.
I claim:
l. The combination with a bowl, basin or similar fixture having an outlet, an overfiow and a channel leading from the overflow; of a strainer in the outlet, said strainer having a main water passageway and ports leading therefrom and communicating with the overflow channel, and means for closing the main water passageway and establish a flow of water through the aforesaid ports into the overflow channel.
2. The combination with a bowl, basin or similar fixture having an outlet, an overflow and a channel leading' from the overflow; of a strainer in the outlet, said strainer having a main water passageway and ports leading therefrom and communieating with the overflow channel, and a hollow plug adapted to be inserted into the main water passageway to close the same, said plug having means for connection with a water supply, and provided with outlet ports adapted to register with the lirst mentioned ports.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
BENJAMIN JENKINS.
