IMPROVEMENT IN INDIA-RUBBER BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,020, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS ELLIOTT, Jr., of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Rubber Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
India-rubber boots and shoes have been made with a lining of felt, and with woven or knitted fabrics. These substances cause the feet to perspire and do not allow the insensible vapors to pass away; hence boots and shoes of this character are disagreeable to the wearer, and actually unhealthy, as the foot becomes soft and tender, and the free exhalations of perspiration are checked. Elforts have been made to obtain some lining material that would not be subject to the inconveniences and difficulties before mentioned.
After extended experiments and research I have discovered that material made in imitation of seal-skin is the best adapted to the lining of boots and shoes, because it does not render the feet tender, but allows perspiration to pass off, and the feet do not become too hot; neither are they subject to becoming chilled, as is the case with boots or shoes lined with cotton or linen.
The artificial seal-skin is made with cotton warps and a weft of cows-hair, sometimes having a slight admixture of wool, or of vegetable fiber. The woven material is napped so as to draw out the ends of the cows-hair in a manner that makes the fabric somewhat like a plush.
The rubber boot or shoe lined with this artificial seal-skin is a new article of manufacture, the same being more durable, cheap, easy to the feet, and better for ventilation than shoes 7 Witnesses HENRY L. HOTGHKISS, J. OSBORN.
