Description

L. I. McDEVITT. COMBINATION SWING AND COUCH.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. I9, 1919.
Fig.2.
LESLIE I. MGDEVITT, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
COMBINATION SWING AND COUCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LESLIE I. McDEyrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at iouston, in thecounty of Harris and State (if-Texas, have invented certain new and useful improvements 111 Comblnation Sw ngs and Couches, of which the following is a trated where1n specification. V
This nvention relates to new and useful improvements in a combination swing and couch.
One object of the invention is to provide a device'of the character described, specially designed for the use of infants and small children an comprehending a swinging seat which is readily convertible into a swinging couch. g
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be casily'collapsedand folded together, so as to occupy small space when not in use.
A further feature of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is simple in construction and consequently may be cheaply and easily manufactured.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to cer tain novel features of construction, ar rangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illusin the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, shows a front elevation of the device. 4
Fig. 2, shows a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, shows a fragmentary perspective view, shown as a swinging seat.
Fig. 4, shows a fragmentary perspective view shown as a'swinging couch, and
Fig. 5, shows a side view of the adjusting link employed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of refer-' ence designate similar parts in each of thefigures, the numerals 1, 1, and 2, 2, respectively, refer to the front and rear legs which are spaced apart and connected together at their upper ends by means of the cross bars 3 and 4, thus forming the supporting framework, said legs 1 and 2, at each side being pivoted together at the point 5. A body, consisting of the bottomj6 and the upstanding fixed sides 7, 7, is suspended between Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 19, 1919. Serial No. 318,596.
Patented ream, 1920.
said legs by means of the front and rear suspending chains or cords 8, 8, and 9, 9, whichv are attached at their upper ends to the respective bars 3 and 4, and at their lower ends to the corresponding sides 7, 7.
A foot rest is provided consisting of the sections 10, and Y11, which are hinged together and the former of whichis hinged to the front endof the bottom 6. Links 12-are pivotally connected, atone end, to each end of the section 11 and the other ends of these links are formed with hooks 13, adapted to. engage over'the studs 14, projecting outfrom the respective ends of the sections 10, so as to hold said sections 10 and 11 in position as a foot rest when i the device is used as a swinging seat, as
lllustrated 1n Flg. 3. When the. device is used as a swing couch, the hooks '13 may be engaged over the studs .15 carried bythe front ends of the sides'7, to hold said sectionslO and 11 in position to form a closed end of the body, as illustrated in Fig. 4. A table board 16 is arranged at the front end of the body, whose ends rest upon the sides, 7. One of the chains 8 passes through an opening in one end of this board and the other end of the board has an end notch 17 through which the other chain 8 passes, thus permitting the last mentioned end to be disengaged, and the board 16 to be swung around out of the way as shown in Fig. 3.
A reclining back 18 is provided which is hinged at its lower end to the back end of the bottom 6, and hinged to each edge of this back are the side guards 19, 19, which may be folded down on the back when desired.
lVhen in use, these guards will stand at right angles to the back, and when used, as a couch, the back 18 will form a continuation of the bottom 6, and will be held in that position by means of side links 12, 12, similar to the link 12, said side links being pivoted at one end to the rear ends of the sides 7, and at their other end,-b'eing formed into hooks which engage over studs 20 projecting inwardly from the adjacent ends of the guards 19. The back is also sustained in reclining position by side cords, or chains 21, 21, which are attached at their upper ends to the cross bar 4, and at their lower ends to the free end of said back. When the device is used as a seat or swing, the back is brought into approximately vertical position and there held by engaging the hooks of the links 12 12, over corresponding studs as 22, projecting out from the edges of the back 18.
The entire device is mounted on Wheels 23, so'as to be readily movable and'as is obvious, may be easily collapsed and folded up when not in use.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, in-' cluding a body having a bottom and sides, a foot rest hinged to the front end of the bottom and 'including tvvo sections hinged together, means for securing said sectionsiin a fixedi position relative to each: other and to said bottom, a back hinged to the rear end: of said bottom, nside' guards hinged to the side edges of said back and means-for holding said back at different points of adjustment relative to the bottom.
2.. A device of the character described, in-
cluding" a body, having a bottom and. sides,
means for suspending said body, a foot rest hinged. to the front end, of the bottom and includingtwo sections hinged together,
means for securing said sections in a fixed positlon relative to each. other, and to said bottom,xa' back hinged to the rear end of bottom, side guards hinged'to the side edges'of said back and means-for holding said back. at different points'of adjustment relative to the bottom.
3. A device of the character described inmeans for holding said back at different points of adjustment. relative to the bottom 4'. In a device of the character described,
a: body formed of a bottom and sides, a foot rest hinged to the front end of the bottomand formed of tWo sections hinged together, means for holding said sections ina given position relative to each other,: said means being also adapted to hold said foot rest in a given position relative to said body, a
back hinged to the rear end of the bottom, means for holding said back in agiven posr-v tion relative to the body, and side guards hinged to the side, edges of the back andadapted to stand. at right angles thereto or r tobe iolded down thereon. I
In'testimony WhereotI. have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two: subscribing Witnesses.
