2 Claims. (Cl. 15544) This invention relates to a bassinet which can be used either inside or outside of an automobile, and which is constructed so that it can be converted into a childs chair for supporting a child within an automobile.
The features wherein the invention resides will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the appended claims.

As stated above the invention relates to a bassinet which can be used as a bassinet for supporting a small child either within an automobile or outside of an automobile, and which is so constructed that it can be divided transversely to provide a chair section for supporting an older child in the automobile. The bassinet herein illustrated comprises a rectangular supporting frame 1 from which depends a bassinet body indicated generally at 2. The supporting frame comprises the side rails 3 and the head and foot rails 4, 5.
The side rails 3 have leg elements 6 pivotally connected thereto at the head end of the bassinet, as shown at 7. The foot ends of the side rail-s 3 have other leg elements 9 pivoted thereto, as shown at 10, said leg elements 9 also preferably being connected at their lower end by the cross bar 11. The leg elements 6 are shown as being connected together at their lower ends by a cross bar 8.
Each leg element 6 is also connected to the corre sponding side rail 3 through the medium of a folding brace member 12 comprising the two sections 13 and 14 which are pivotally connected together and one of which is pivotally connected to the leg 6, as shown at 15, and the other of which is pivotally connected to the side rail as indicated at 16.
A similar folding brace element 17 also connects each leg 9 to the side rail 3, and each brace 17 comprises two brace elements 18 and 19 which are pivotally connected together at 20, and one of which is pivoted to the leg member 9, the other of which is pivoted to the side rail.
The legs 6 and the legs 9 are thus foldable so as to provide for storing the bassinet in a small space when 2,730,163 Patented Jan. 10, 1956 which extends loosely through an ear 23 secured to the.
leg 6, each stem 22 having a head 24 at its lower end. With this construction the hook members 21 may be raised into an operative position in which they are adapted to hook over the back 64 of an automobile seat, as shown in Fig. 3, or if the bassinet is being used outside of the automobile the hook members may be lowered into an inoperative position, as shown in dotted lines Fig. l.
The legs 9 are provided with leg extensions 26 which can be moved downwardly to extend the length of the legs when the bassinet is being used in an automobile, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the extended legs will rest on the floor of the automobile and properly support the foot end of the bassinet. These leg extensions are in the form of channel members which embrace legs 9 and each of which is provided with a slot 27 through which extends the bolt 28 connecting the brace member 19 with the leg 9. By loosening the nut 29 on each bolt 28 the leg extensions 26 can be moved downwardly to give the legs 9 the necessary added length so that they will rest on the floor when the bassinet is positioned within the automobile with the hook members 21 hooked over the back 64 of the automobile seat.
In accordance with the present invention the supporting frame 1 and the bassinet body 2 are both divided transversely so that they can be separated into head sections and foot sections, as shown in Fig. 2, the head section of the frame being indicated at 30, and the foot section at 31, and the head section of the body being indicated at 32 and the foot section at 33. The separable sections of each side rail 3 may be connected together to form the complete supporting frame for the bassinet in any approved way. As herein shown the foot section of each side rail 3 has secured thereto at its free end a sleeve 34 into which the free end 44 of the rear section of the corresponding side rail is adapted to enter and when the two sections are properly assembled they may be connected together by a locking pin 35 which extends through alined openings 36 and 37 formed in the sleeve 34 and the free end 44 of the front side rail section. This locking pin 35 may be conveniently carried by a spring arm 38 which is pivotally secured to the sleeve 34 so that by bending the arm 38 backwardly the locking pin may be positioned to enter the alined holes 36 and 37, the spring arm 38 serving to hold the locking pin in its locking position.
Any suitable means may be employed for detachably connecting the abutting edges 39 and 40 of the front and rear sections 32 and 33 of the bassinet body. A connecting means on the order of the well known zipper connection may conveniently be employed because this provides a quick and easy means for connecting or separating said abutting edges. v
So long as the two sections of the bassinet body are connected together, as shown in Fig. 1, the device provides a bassinet which, as stated above, can be used either outside of an automobile or inside of an automobile for supporting a small child.
By disconnecting the two sections of the bassinet body, as shown in Fig. 2, the head section 32 then constitutes a chair which can be hung over the back of an automobile seat and is adapted to support a child which is of an age to sit up.
In order to hold the child in the chair section I have provided a U-shaped retaining member 41, the arms 42 of which are pivoted tothe side rails preferably by the same means by which the brace sections 14 are pivoted thereto. When the. device is, used as a bassinet the re.-
taining member 41 may be folded backwardly on to the end of the bassinet, as shown in Fig. 1. When, however, the chair section 32. is to be used in-the automobile the retaining member 41 is folded forwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, in which position it rests on the free ends 44. of the front section 30 of .the side rails 3, and thus serves to prevent the. child from falling out of the chair in front. There is also provided a retaining; strap 45 which is connected at one .end to thelunder .side. of the chair section body 32 and which is adapted to be connected to, the. retaining member 41, as illustrated .inFig. 4. As herein. shown the. Strap 45 is rovided with a snap fastener 46. so that theend of the. strap may be folded over the crossbar of the retaining member 41., and then detachably connected to the body of the strap.
If desired the retaining member 41 may be provided with balls or other play items. which are mounted on a U-shaped supporting wire 47 carried by the retaining member 41, so that when the child is occupying the. chair he has in front of him some articles with which he can amuse himself.
I claim:
1. A convertible bassinet and, childs chair comprising an elongated supporting frame, a bassinet body suspended from the frame, said supporting frame and bassinet body both being divided transversely in the. same vertical plane to provide separable head and foot sections of the frame and separable head and foot sections of the bassinet body, leg elements secured to the end of the head section of the frame, other leg elements secured to the end of the foot section of the frame, means detachably connecting together the head and foot sections of the frame, other means detachably connecting together the head and foot sections of the. bassinet body, hook shaped supporting members secured to one section of the frame and adapted to be hooked over the back of an automobile seat, the head and foot sections of the frame and body when connected together constituting a complete bassinet, and, when separated from each other, the section of the frame having the hook-shape supporting members together with the corresponding section of the bassinet body constituting a chair section for supporting a child in an automobile, a U-shaped retaining member, and means pivotally connecting the arms thereof to the center portion of the sides of the chair section frame whereby said retaining member may be swung from an inoperative folded position at the outer end of the chair section into an operative position in which the transverse portion of said retaining member extends across the chair section in front of a child occupying said section and rests on the end-s of the side members of the chair section frame.
2. A convertible bassinet and childs chair comprising an elongated supporting frame divided transversely into separable head and foot sections, a bassinet body suspended from the frame and also divided transversely into separable head and foot sections, leg elements secured to. the end of the. head section of the frame, other leg elements connected to the, foot section of the frame, means detachablyconnecting together the head and foot sections of both the frame and the. bassinet body, hookshaped supporting members secured to the head section of the; frame and adapted to be. hooked over the back of an automobile seat, the head and foot sections of the frame and body when connected together constituting a complete bassinet, and the headsections of the frame and body when separated from the foot sections constituting a childs chair for use in an automobile, and a U-shaped retaining member pivotally connected to the chair section portion of the frame and adapted to be swung from an inoperative position at the end of the frame into an operative position in which the transverse portion of said retaining member extends across the chair section in front of a child occupying said section and rests on the ends of the side members of the chair section frame.
