Specification of Letters Patent;
d ianuary '28, 1915 Serial No; 4,841.
1918. Serial No. 229,694.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN HARDINGE, the Uni-ted States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Closures, of which the following is a full, clear,
concise, and exact description, Ing had to the accompanying of this specification.
formin a 'art ID reference bedraw mgs,
This invention relates to Improvements in casing closures.
The objects of the invention are: First, to provide a new and Improved form of means for holding or looking a. closure of a casing in its sa1d means being of such closed position, the a character as to require manipulation before the closure can be opened,
but constructed in such a manner that the closure can be moved to its closed position without any separate manipulation of the locking means.
Second, to provide means of the character described, which includes a thumb piece to I be manually operated prior to the opening of the closure, and
' coacts with the cm which is so formed and er In such a mannerv as to be moved out of the path of the cover when the latter is being closed.
Further objects will appear as scription progresses the dereference being had to drawings in which I have illustrated my invention in connection with the gear casing of an engine lathe.
Figure 1 1s a perspective view of the headstock end of a lathe; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view on line 2-2 In both ters refer to similar Referring to the character 5 of a lathe, which is figures similar reference characparts.
drawing the reference indicates the head stock spindle driven through the cone pulley 6 and is geared through a train of gears to the lead screw shaft 7 A part-of this gear train is located in the casing 8,
through one side of 9 which is used for gearing,
change speed form no part Pivoted to the casing 10 is a cover 11, the
spaced from the adj The opposed edges which projects a handle manipulating certain the details ofwhich the present invention. by means of the pintle free edge of which is acent of the cover and casing edge of the casing.
- Patented Feb. 10, 1920. Dividedanii this application filed April 26,
are provided with vertical abutments 12 and horizontal abutments 13, which coact to lock the handle 9 in certain adjusted positions.
lVhile the weight of the cover 11 is sulfic1ent to maintain it in its closed position under ordinary workmg cond1t1ons, in order to prevent any the cover, I provide means for accidental displacement of looking it in its closed position. This means comprises a plunger 14:,
which reciprocates in a bore 15 formed in the casing, and is prevented from rotating in the bore by means of a set screw 16, which extends into a slot 17 formed in the side of the plunger. The
plunger 14; is urged upwardly by a spring 18 in the bottom of the bore 15. end of the plunger The upper is provided with a thumb piece 19, which has an outwardly and downwardly inclined cam surface, which c0-acts with the lower edge of the cover 11 to push the thumb piece 19 and the plunger 14 downwardly out of the path of the lower edge of the cover while the cover is being closed. lVhcn the cover has been moved to its closed position the spring 18 returns the thumb piece to its uppermost position in which the inner edge thereof acts as an abutment for maintaining the cover in its closed position.
'To release the cover it is simply necessary to push the thumb piece lownwardly, whereupon the cover may be opened by means of the handle 20.
r This invention is a division of my appli- -Having described my invention,
claim is:
1. The combination vided with an on said casing, edge of sald cation, Serial No. 41,81 filed January '28,
what I with a casing proopening, of a cover for said o )enin havin one ed e lvotall mounted and means coa'cting with an cover opposite said pivotededge for holding said cover in its closed pos tion, comprising a plunger reciprocally mounted in said casing, and provided with a thumb piece for holding the cover closed,
the said thumb piece having an inclined can'i'surface for coacting with the cover to move the thumb piece out of the path .of
the cover when the cover coactmg with said plunger and means for is being closed,
to prevent rotation of said thumb piece.
2. The combination w1th a casing provided With an opening of a cover for said opening having one edge pivotally mounted on said casing, and means coactin with an edge of said cover opposite sai pivoted edge for holding said cover in its closed position, comprising a, thumb piece, means for coacting with the cover to move said thumb piece out of the path of said cover when the cover is being closed, and automatic means for positioning the thumb piece 10 to lock the cover when the latter is in its closed position. Q i i "In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 17th day 01% April, 1918.
