Application filed April 22, 1916.
1 "0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VALTER F. Moonn, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Livingston, in the county of Park and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Cover, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a cover'for barrels and other receptacles and the invention aims to provide, in a device of this type, novel means for mounting and controlling the lid of the device.
The invention aims to improve the construction of the body and the lid.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the lid may be moved to and from open and closed positions by manipulating an actuating element located at one side of the body portion of the cover. I
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the; details of construction hereinafter described{ and claimed, it. being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows the invention in top plan; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the lid being closed; Fig. 3 is a side elevation, the lid being opened; Fig. 4 is a cross section taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The device forming the subject matter of this application preferably but not neces sarily is fashioned from metal throughout and comprises a body 1 of any desired contour, the shape of the body 1 depending upon the shape of the top of the receptacle Specification of Letters Patent.

straight edge 5 of the top 2 of the body 1 being united by means of a hinge 6. When the lid 7 is in a closed position, the lid rests on the top 2 of the body, the opening 4 in the top being of such size that the top will serve as a support for the lid, attention being directed to the dotted line showing of the opening 4 in Fig. 1. In the edge of the top 2 of the body there is formed a notch 8. This notch 8 may be employed for receiving a nail or other securing element whereby the body may be attached to a barrel or other receptacle; or, if desired, the notch 8 may serve as a prize tool seat adapted to receive a nail or wire which, being used as a lever may be employed for starting thelid 7 toward an open position, should the lid be rusted in place, sealed or otherwise held.
The invention contemplates the use of a transverse actuating shaft embodying ends 9 and 16, an intermediate, bail-shaped crank 10, and an operating handle 11 of any desired sort on the end 9. The ends 9 and 16 of the shaft are mounted to rock in the flange 3 ofthe body 1, slightly below the top 2 and relatively near to the cooperating straight edges 5 and 5 of the lid 7 and the top' 2 respectively.
By means of securing elements 12, a keeper -14 is secured to the under face of the alid. 7 and in the keeper, the central portion "of the bail-shaped crank 10 is slidably received. Intermediate its ends, the keeper 14 is spaced apart from the lid 7 so as to define, adjacent the ends of the keeper, shoulders one of which, denoted by the numeral 15 has a function which will be pointed out hereinafter.
In practical operation, the shaft is rotated by manipulating the handle 11, the latter being located exteriorly of the flange 3. The central portion of the bail-shaped crank slides in the keeper 14 and bears against the under face of the lid 7 whereby the lid may be swung to an open position as shown in Fig. 3, it being possible to close the lid by reversing the operation above described. When the lid 7 has been swung to an open position as shown in Fig. 3, the intermediate portion of the bail-shaped crank 10 coacts with the shoulder 15 at the inner end of the keeper 14 and thus the lid is prevented from swinging rearwardly beyond the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
body including a top having an opening and a depending flange assembled With the top; a lid hinged to the top and constituting a closure for the opening; a keeper on the under face of the lid; a shaft journaled for rotation in the flange and provided at one end With an exposed operating means, the shaft including a crank slidably received in the keeper.
3. In a device of the class described, a body provided With an opening; a lid hinged to the body and constituting a closure for the opening; a keeper secured to the under face of the lid and having a shoulder; a shaft j ournaled for rotation in the body and provided with a crank slidably received in the keeper, to efiect an opening and a closing of the lid When the shaft is rotated, the intermediate portion of the crank being adapted to coac't With the shoulder to prevent a rearward swinging of the lid beyond a predetermined position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
