Application 2, 1318. Serial ifl'o 232,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VILLnnr M. Crisis- TOPI-IER, a citizen of the United titans, rosiding at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to brooms and, more particularly, to improved means for securing a detachable broom head to its handle.
The invention consists of the combination with the handle, broom head, and a twopart holder for attaching the broom head to the handle, of which an improved bolt, nut, and spring-link handle, appearing more fully hereinafter and set forth in the ap pended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved construction of broom.
2 is a vertical section through the holder, the head being; partly in section.
3 is a perspective view of the nut and the link carried thereby; and
Fig. 41 is a detail view partly in section showirg a modified form oi head.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing 1 indicates the broom proper or head having the broom straw secured around the core 2 by split rings .-5 which are spaced, as clearly shown, in order to form a pair of annular projections or ribs. These rings are placed in position upon the core under pressure, so as to bind the broom straw.
My improved construction of holder comprises a pair of duplicate members and provided with overlapping apertured ears 6, which are secured to the broom handle I by rivet 8 in such a manner that these 1nembers are free to swing on the pivot in order to separate the members. The members 4% and 5 are substantially U-shaped in cross section, and are provided with enlarged lower ends havingannular spaced ribs 9. forming on their inner faces annular grooves adapted to receive the annular projections formed by the rings 3 when the two members of the holder are brought together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These members are formed of sheet metal stamped to provide the annular ribs and are reinforced by forming longitudinal ribs 10. By stamping t e nembers l andb toprovide the grooves the 'rooves are formed substantially semiin shape. The upper portions or and 5 snugly engage the r the handle 7, which handle is split longitudinally, as shown at 11, in order to allow the n.;nl)ers to be drawn together I vr lLL
1 around the head.
@ne of the members is provided with a square opening 12 to receive the head 13 of a bolt 1 and the other member is provided with an opening 15 to receive a tubular nut 16 which works on the bolt 14:, and is provided with a head 17 having a pair or" spaced cars 18, the outer walls of which are pro.ided with spaced grooves 19. These ears are apertured, as shown at 20, in which the free ends of the spring link 21 are pivotally mounted in such a manner that when. the link is moved outwardly into the grooves 19. it will be held so as to form a handle in order to allow the nut to be rotated so as to bind the two members of the holder over the head.
The cars 18 are also provided with grooves 22 to receive the spring link in order to hold the same in a plane parallel with the holder and in the form shown, the holder is cut away, as shown at 23, in order to allow the free end of the link to engage the wooden handle.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4:, the head 1 is provided with a sheet metal ring 24 having a pair of spaced annular ribs 25 adapted to fit within the grooves of the holder, and it will be seen that by this construction the head will be provided with spa cod annular proi ections.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a broom which is provided with a novel form of head to receive a holder carried by a handle, which allows the holder and head to be quickly connected or disconnected, and by construct- 111g" a broom in this manner, when the head is worn out, a new head can be readily placed in position within the holder.
I claim:
1. In abroon1,the combination of abroom head. a handle, a two-part holder connected to the handle and also clamping the broom head and thereby detachably securing it to the handle, a bolt and nut connecting the two parts of the holder together and causing them to clamp the broom head, said nut having locking means, and a spring link handle pivoted to the nut and adapted to be either folded alongside the handle, or, to be swung outwardly for use in turning the nut, said locking means on the nut serving to hold the spring link-in either folded or ex tended position;
2. In a broom, the combination of a broom.
head, a handle a two-part holder connected to the handle andalso clamping the broom head and thereby detachably securing it to the handle, a bolt and nut connecting the two parts of the holder together and cansing them to clamp the broom head, said nut having ears provided with grooves,
and a spring link handle of bail-shape whose ends are pivoted to said ears, said spring link being adapted to be either folded alongside the handle or swung outwardly for use in turning the nut, the aforesaid grooves receiving and holding the parts of the spring-link handle when the latter is either in folded or extended position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aih'x my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
lVlLLlAh l' M. CHRISTOPHER.
