2 Claims. (01. -171) The invention relates to a broom and more particularly to a broom having a head comprising two oppositely disposed metallic plates.

The object of the invention is to provide a broom of the type mentioned having simple, effective and inexpensive means for rigidly connecting the two plates of the head with a metallic handle and with each other.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the drawing and from the following description and claims.

In the drawing I have shown in detail a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it will be understood that various changes may be made from the construction shown, and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims forming a part of this specification being relied upon for that purpose.

Referring to the drawing, It! represents a mass of suitable fibers arranged and cut to constitute the body of a broom. The fibers are connected with each other at their upper end portions by means of a plastic compound or by means of stitching or otherwise in accordance with conventional practice.

For holding the broom body It] a head is provided which comprises two similar oppositely disposed sheet metal plates l2 and I4. The two plates are shaped at their lower portions to embrace and enclose the upper portion of the broom body, the said plates preferably overlapping each other at their edges as shown in Fig. 8. The two plates are shaped at their upper portions to provide two oppositely disposed at least partly cylindrical longitudinal sockets to and [8 as shown in Fig. 4. A longitudinal metallic cylindrical handle 22 is provided which is preferably tubular, the exterior diameter of the handle being such that it is adapted at its lower end portion to enter and fit the sockets l6 and I8 in the plates [2 and [4. The socket [6 of the plate I2 is welded to the lower portion of the handle ID, as indicated at 24, and the socket 18 of the plate I4 is welded tothe opposite side of the lower portion of the handle, as indicated at 26. The welding at 24 and 26 serves to rigidly connect the handle to the upper portions of the two plates and also serves in conjunction with the handle to rigidly connect the upper portions of the two plates with each other. It will be observed that after welding the two plates and the handle constitute a rigid unitary structure.

For covering the upper ends of the sockets l6 and 18 of the two plates a flanged collar 28 is preferably provided. The collar has a central hole which fits the handle and the diameter of the flange of the collar is such that is approximately fits the upper ends of the outer periphcries of the sockets l6 and I8. The walls of the sockets are provided respectively with small oppositely disposed holes or depressions 30 and 32. When the collar 28 is in place, its flange is deformed at opposite sides thereof to provide projections which extend into the holes or depressions 30 and 32 to hold the collar in place.

The invention claimed is:

1. In a broom, the combination of a broom body comprising fibers, a head comprising two oppositely disposed plates in fixed relationship with each other and having their lower portions embracing and fitting the upper portion of the head, the upper portions of the said plates being shaped to provide two oppositely disposed at least partly cylindrical longitudinal sockets, means for connecting the lower portion of the plates of the head with the upper portion of the broom body, and a longitudinal metallic cylindrical handle the lower portion of which is within and permanently fits both of the said sockets, the opposite sides of the said handle being welded respectively to the sockets of the two plates so that the handle is rigidly connected with the plates and so that the plates are rigidly conneced with each other by means of the said handle.

In a broom, the combination of a broom body comprising fibers, a head comprising two oppositely disposed plates in fixed relationship with each other and havingtheir lower portions embracing and fitting the upper portion of the head, the upper portions of the said plates being shaped to provide two oppositely disposed at least partly cylindrical longitudinal sockets and the walls of the said sockets being provided with 3 holes near their upper ends, means for connecting the lower portion of the plates of the head with the upper portion of the broom body, a tlongitudinal metallic cylindrical handle the lower I portion of which is within and permanently fits 9 both of the said sockets, the opposite sides of the j'said handle being welded respectively to the sockets of the two plates so that the handle is rigidly connected with the plates and so that the plates are rigidly connected with each other by m means of the said handle, and a collar which surrounds and fits the handle adjacent the upper ends of the sockets and which has a flange surrounding and approximately fitting the vvupper ends of the outer peripheries of the sockets, the 1' said flange being deformed at opposite sides thereof to provide projections which enter the socket wall holes to retain the collar in place.
