ELONGATED CYLINDRICAL PROJECT'ILE SHELL. APPLICATION FILED ocT. 25. Isis.

aromas E. MURRAY, .13., F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ELOITGATED cYLrNDmoAL PRoJEo'rILE-sHELLL I To all z'zihoin it may concern.
'State of New Be it known that I, THOMAS E. MURRAY, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Elongated Cylindrical Projectile-Sh'ells, of which the following is a specification.
The'invention relates to elongated cylindrical projectile shells of sheet metal of the type commonly known as trench mortar shells. n y j In the accompanying drawingsigure 1 is a longitudinal section of the shell. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the right hand end of the shell, as showninFig. l.
I Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The body portion. A of the shell is cylindrical in s ceivethe usual fuse an receptacle-fertile exploding charge, said fuse and receptaclechangeable half sections E, F struck up from sheet metal, which sections after being placed with their straight edges in registermg contact are united by electrically welding said edges together. G is the booster tube, here cup-shaped, for containing the propelling charge. end wall H of said booster tube is electrically welded to the outer face of the' end wall B of the shell body. The circumferential wall of said tube may be perforated, as
' of manufacture of wallsB, C, are made by ape and closed at one end by an: integral wall B. In the opposite end wall "C is a central opening surrounded by aflange D. The flanged openin is intended to I'e-' The outerpface of the.

and H, which is very strong and, therefore, ofi'ers ample resistanceto the explosive force of the propelhng charge in the booster tube.
I also avoid the use 0 any addition-a1 holding receptacle for the said charge inserted 1n the booster tube, thus saving the expense said part. The sections of the shell body,.including the integral end w a simple stamping operatlon, so that there 1s nothing to be added to complete the shell after" the sections are welde together, other than the booster tubedescribed. .Hence these projectiles can bemade very cost as compare tions.
I claim: I 7 An elongated cylindrical closed at one end and forme tudinally divided's'ections struck up from sheet metal and electrically welded to ether at their meeting edges, and a cup-s aped booster tube concentric with said projectile shell and having the face of its end wall electrically Welded to the face of the end wall of said shell.
In testimony whereof I. have aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
with other known construe two longi- 7 shown at I, and said end .wall H may be rapidly and at greatly reduced
