SCHOOL-DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Application filed March 21, 1917. Serial No. 156,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in School- Desks, of which the following is a specification.
An object is to produce an improved desk having a compartment in which articles such as gymnasium wearing apparel, paint rags, paint boXes and other articles of the same character, may be kept separate and distinct from the books and papers of the pupil, without incommoding the pupil or obstructing the aisle.
This and other objects are attained in the school desk described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of my improved desk.v The desk illustrated consists of frame members 1 and 2 having hinged arms 3 adapted to support a seat 4: in front of the desk. Uprights 5 and 6 are provided for securing a back 7 for the seat 4. Formed integrally with frames 1 and 2 and extending upwardly at an angle to back supports 5 and 6, are members 8 and 9, the tops of these members being secured to the bottom 10 of a book and paper compartment formed beneath the desk top 11 and closed by sides 12 and 13. Extending between back supports 5 and 6 and compartment supports 8 and 9, is a partition 14 mounted in ways or grooves 15 formed in the supports. The ways are so located that the partition is inclined with its upper edge spaced from the seat back 7 and with its lower edge-brought adjacent to the lower edge of the back. The position of the partition is such that it will not interfere with the legs of the pupil. Furthermore, the
position of the partition is such that it is located well toward the front of the desk frame and materially away from the knees of the pupil.
The space between the back 7 and partition 14 is V-shaped and is particularly adapted for holding such articles as gymnasium wearing apparel, also domestic science aprons, paint rags and paint boxes. This enables these articles to be kept separate and distinct from the books and papers of the pupil so that they will not become soiled and otherwise damaged.
The members 5 and 9 and 6 and 8, converge so as to leave the ends of the receptacle open. Thus the air may circulate freely therethrough so as to dry therein the miscellaneous articles such as shoes, paint rags, etc.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a school desk the combination of a frame comprising substantially vertical back supports and compartment supports at an angle to the back supports, said back and compartment supports having inclined ways formed upon their interior, a back secured to the back supports, a compartment secured upon the compartment supports, and a partition mounted in the ways and forming with the bottom of the compartment and the back a V-shaped open-ended receptacle adapted to hold equipment for special branches of the scholars course.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 19th day of March, 1917.
ANNA MARTIN.
