Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1918. Serial No. 259,696.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, HARVEY G. SHIRLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Highland Park, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in desks, and has for its object to provide a desk of the character specified, especially adapted for use with stenographers and typists, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved desk looking from the front,
Fig. 2 is a similar view looking from the rear,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and
Fig. 4: is a perspective view from above with the top open.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion, the improved desk consists of a body which is composed of three portions namely a central portion 1 and two lateral portions 2 and 3, respectively, the said portions 1, 2, and 3 being box bodies or hollow. The portion 2 1s of greater depth than either portion 1 or 8, as shown, and referring to Fig. .4, it will be noticed that this portion is divided 'by vertical partitions 4 into a series of narrow compartments extending the full width of the said portion, and that the innermost compartment is of considerably greater extent than the others.
.It will be obvious that this portion might be divided into any suitable number of compartments of any shape or size. The sections 1 and 2 have hinged covers 5 and 6 which are hinged at the fronts of theportions to open outwardly away from the user, and the compartment 3 is open at the rear of the desk, and has a horizontal partition 7 dividing it into upper and lower pigeon holes.
These three portions of the desk 1, 2, and 3. are arranged at. obtuse angles with respect to each other, and the rear edges of the covers 5 and 6 for the compartments 1 and 2 and of the fixed cover 8 for the compartment 3 are rounded in such manner that the typist may sit comfortably within the half circle formed by the cover. The portion 3 has a depressed table 9 upon which a typewriter may be placed in convenient position for operating the same. The portions are supported by legs 10. and the front of the desk is suitably paneled as shown more particularly in Fig. 1.
It will be obvious that the improved desk may be of any suitable material and finish. and in practice the desk has a height of about 31 inches. Iron straps are also arranged across the front section at the bottom in order to strengthen and reinforce this section. The outer edges of the sections 6 and 8 meet the outer edge of the section 5 at an obtuse angle as shown, and the rear edges of the said portions form a continuous curving line from one end of the desk to the other.
The desk may be considered as consisting of a central portion and rearwardly extending diverging wings, aifordinga space between the body and the wings for the chair of the user. With a swinging chair, access may be had to any part of the desk without rising from the chair.
I claim A desk consisting of a body portion and wings extending rearwardly and outwardly from the ends of the body portion, the rear edges of the wings and body forming a continuous curved line, and the front edges of the wings meeting the front edges of the body at equal obtuse angles, one of the wings having a depressed table at its free end for receiving a typewriting machine, the
top of the wing adjacent to the depressed table being fixed. while the tops of the other wing and body are hinged to open.
