Description

E. D. WILLARD.
Gas Burning Gridil on. No. 13,283. Patented July 17, 1855.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDW. D. WILLARD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
GAS-BURNING GRIDIRON.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,283, dated July 17, 1855.
T '0 all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, EDWIN D. WILLARD, of the city of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Burnin Gridiron; and I do hereby declare the ftfilowing to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in having two lines of escape holes for the gas at a distance from the center upper line of each bar of one eighth the circumference of the bar, instead of one row of holes on the center upper line; this covered with a corrugated plate moving upon ways or slides and operated by rack and pinion so as to make the flame act upon each part of the corrugated plate.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
The legs, a, are made longer on the back than on the front so as to give an inclination forward to the corrugated plate, 9, and allow the essence to drain off into a dripping pan beneath. The rear bar, e, of the gridiron projects beyond it and has a screw upon one end so as to fasten to a gut-ta percha pipe connecting with the nipple of a gas burner. This, 6, and the other tubes or bars, (Z, connect and allow the passage of the gas to be used in the operation. On each side of these cross bars, d, and at a distance of e circumference from top line of each is a row of small holes which act as burners to the gridiron. By having these holes thus arranged with reference to the upper line of the bar we obtain the same quantity of heat and at a saving of more than two thirds the quantity of gas, under the same pressure, than we would were they larger and upon the upper line.
h, is a rack fixed on the under side of front slide f.
2', is a pinion working into rack 72..
j, is a winch or handle to Work the pinion.
7c, is a strap in which pinion works.
Z, is a friction wheel.
m, is a check head to the slide, the rack h coming against it.
n, is a bent wire passing from front strip and over the slide to prevent the same from moving out of play.
Gas is turned on through the bar, 6, and passes into the tubes 01 containing the jet holes or burners. The corrugated plate covers these jet holes, andfire being applied to the gasthe winch 7' moves the rack and pinion giving a lateral motion to the corrugated plate and thus there appears to be but one body of flame diffused over the whole surface of the plate.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is not the perforated tubes, nor the corrugated plate, but
I claim The gas burning tubes in combination with a corrugated plate acted upon by-rack and pinion and moving upon slides, the whole being combined substantially as is herein set forth. V
