Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
JEREMIAH W. BROWN, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORTO SAMUEL FOLSOM,
OF CHARLESTOETN, MASSACHUSETTS. y Y
ROTARY SMOOTHINGr-IRON.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 10,686, dated March 21, 1854.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH lV. BROWN, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Method of Constructing Laundry Smoothing-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same..v
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar form and make of the same.
The body or smooting part of the iron I make with two vor more faces, to revolve on an axis at each end passing through the stems of the handle, so that when the lower face A. which is in use becomes cooled in operation and requires heating up again, I can by merely taking out a pin, B, or some other equivalent turn the upper part, 0, down to take the place of the lower face, A, when cooled in working. Thisupper face, c, while the lower face is in operationis heated by means of a spirit lamp D with tube E or its equivalent, introduced into the interior of the iron, which is made hollow for the purpose as shown in plan sect-ion, No. 2. There are several ways of introducing thev method of heat-ing, and severalarticles can be used for the purpose but the methodY as shown in the drawing No. 1 and model appears at present to be the most simple and economica I make the irons of various .sizes to accommodate any kindv of' buslness where smoothing irons are used. The advantages and rough grate bars it can be used with little inconvenience in hot weather, no fire being required and makes cleaner and better work than the common smoothing iron.
The shape of the lamp may be varied and is vregulated by means of a movable tube over the wick tube, twhich adds toor diminishes the flame that heats the iron.,
What I claim asv my invention and desire to secure by LettersPatent is- The revolving smoothing iron, heated by means of a spiritor gas` lamp internally, or its equivalentinv the manner andy for the pur ose substantially as herein set forth 'and described, lthe whole forming a combination for the purpose 'of economy in time and a saving of labor.
JEREMIAH wEEowN.
